Tracking Tiger: Follow Tiger Woods' first round shot-by-shot at The Open Championship

After a top-five finish earlier this month at the Quicken Loans National, Tiger Woods is back on the course this week looking for his first major championship victory since the 2008 U.S. Open.

The 14-time major champion is competing in golf's third major, The Open Championship, this week at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland.

Tiger last played The Open in 2015, missing the cut and finishing 137th. His career at Carnoustie includes a T47 at the 1995 Scottish Open, he missed the cut the following year, then finished T7 at the 1999 Open Championship and T12 at the 2007 Open.

Tiger tees off at 10:21 a.m. ET alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Russell Knox. Follow along for shot-by-shot analysis of his opening round.

Hole 10 - Par 4

Well, this one wasn't great. He finds a bunker, and it looks like he'll have a difficult out. He's up against the edge so Tiger hits this one sideways out into the fairway. Tiger's third shot onto the green is pretty good given the circumstances. He knew from the jump this putt was going to miss as he walks it off. Tap-in bogey. 1-under thru 10.

Thoughts at the turn

This could be Tiger's weekend. He's played well at Carnoustie historically, and he played really well on the front nine. Had he taken advantage of his monster drive on the par 5 and done more than par, he'd be flirting with the leaders with nine holes still to play. His iron tee shots have been phenomenal, and he hasn't made any  his gameplan is working perfectly. Let's see what the back has to offer.

Hole 9 - Par 4

This tee shot isn't as great as others, but his iron finds the fairway to the right. His approach stays down the right side and misses the green, rolling into a bunker. Another solid out with not a lot of green to work with, resting within 10 feet. He drops the putt and closes out the front nine 2-under par

Hole 8 - Par 3

Nothing too fancy here off the tee for Tiger, finding the front of the green and leaving a lengthy look at birdie. Right speed, wrong line as Tiger misses this one left. Easy par. 2-under thru 8.

Hole 7 - Par 4

Another iron for Tiger off the tee and this one flies slow and far down the right side of the fairway. The pin is tucked away to the back right and he plays the approach safe, landing in the middle of the green. Tiger gave this one another good roll, but comes up just short. Par. 2-under thru 7.

Hole 6 - Par 5

Tiger pulls driver for the first time and he smashes this one way down the fairway. The ball landed 274-yards and rolled another 91 to finish 365 yards down the middle of the fairway. Wow! His second shot isn't as good. Tiger went for the green but misses short and left in a bunker. His out is great, getting to within 10 feet of the cup. His birdie putt misses left, leaving for a disappointing tap-in par after an incredible drive. 2-under thru 6.

Hole 5 - Par 4

Another iron, another fairway for Tiger. He didn't like his approach, and for good reason. He loses it to the right, off the green. Luckily his balled rolled off a hill and into a flat area where he'll have a decent chance to get up-and-down. Had his ball stayed up on the hill, he would've had an awkward stance and a ridge to play over on the green. What an effort here. Tiger goes with the putter and plays the hills and slopes perfectly, but leaves the putt one revolution short. Par. 2-under thru 5

Hole 4 - Par 4

Another iron off the tee for Tiger, and this one could've been bad. He plays the contours of the fairway and hits a hill to avoid a burn (stream). Useful approach here from Tiger. Pleading for his ball to get down, it does, rolling within 5 feet of the cup for another birdie chance. That's number two! Tiger drops the putt easily, 2-under thru 4

Hole 3 - Par 4

Tiger goes back to iron on No. 3 and lands this one in the right rough, but it takes a friendly kick into the fairway. Tiger's second shot finds the right side of the green. Good, not great, effort here from TW. His putt misses left, but it's an easy tap-in par. 1-under thru 3

Hole 2 - Par 4

That's a 3-wood off the tee for Tiger, and judging by the club twirl, he loves it. Middle-left side of the fairway, another great tee shot. Tiger plays this one safe, landing the ball pin-high on his approach to the middle of the green. He'll have a lengthy look at birdie. Tiger gave it a go but misses just high and right by a few inches. Par. 1-under thru 2.

Hole 1 - Par 4

Tiger goes with an iron off the tee and stripes it down the middle of the fairway. It's incredibly dry at Carnoustie, so this one rolled well down the fairway. Expect the Big Cat to put up massive driving numbers this week. From 134-yards out Tiger's approach lands on the front-right edge and kicks towards the hole, leaving a great look at birdie on No. 1. BANG. That's a birdie on No. 1 for Tiger, 1-under thru 1.

What's that on Tiger's neck ... ?

Tiger showed up on Thursday wearing KT tape on his neck, sending social media on fire with takes on his health. No big deal, says USA TODAY Sports' golf writer Steve DiMeglio.

Earlier in the day

Kevin Kisner took the early lead, shooting a 5-under 66 thanks to an eagle and four birdies (not to mention his par saves from 10, 20 and 12 feet on the last three holes). Kisner needed just 22 putts to get around the course.
