Phil Mickelson shows us a side of himself we've never seen before

AKRON, Ohio — Phil Mickelson has never been afraid to put himself out on a limb. He sees windows of opportunities when others see dread, he eyes potential instead of trouble.

With no fear and an array of flop shots, cuts and draws, he’s a swashbuckling, go-for-broke opportunist who pulls off the nearly impossible more times than naught. Just check the resume — 5 major championships, 43 PGA Tour titles, a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.

But there are times even Mickelson questions what will Phil do next?

Like when he was asked to bust a move for his new commercial promoting his new line of clothing.

“Yes, Phil, we’d like you to dance. Yes, we’re serious.”

“I was really nervous because I’m not a good dancer,” Mickelson told USA TODAY Sports. “I’ve never been a good dancer. So, I’m very self-conscious about dancing. But sometimes you have to go out of your comfort zone.”

In the spot for Mizzen+Main’s Kennedy style shirt, Mickelson dances on a driving range while nonchalantly dodging incoming golf balls. He’s no John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, or for that matter, he’s no John Travolta in Pulp Fiction. But he certainly isn’t Elaine Benes either.

He’s Phil being Phil — the wry smile, the cool confidence, the unique look. Just as he was when he showed up for a practice round with Tiger Woods this year at the Masters dressed in his line of clothing — a long sleeve, button-down dress shirt. It was an eye-opener but Phil makes the shirt that plays well in the boardroom and on the golf course work.

“I think it’s funny,” Mickelson said of the commercial. “It’s a great way for me to laugh at myself.”

Well, at least he does look good.
