Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returned to the hurt business last night (Sat., July 28, 2018) with UFC on FOX 30 from inside Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, airing live and free on FOX. The event saw Dustin Poirier knockout Eddie Alvarez in impressive fashion (see it again here). In the co-main event, Jose Aldo put away Jeremy Stephens with a violent body shot.
Biggest Winner: Dustin Poirier
Not only did he get some sweet revenge and vindication against Alvarez after putting him away via violent strikes, “Diamond” also likely earned himself his first shot at UFC gold. While he will have to wait until Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor do the dance, Dustin will no doubt be next in line. Poirier looked great, too, putting away the tough-as-nails challenger who is historically hard to stop. Indeed, Poirier has plenty to be happy about after putting on a show up north.
Runner Up: Jose Aldo
Aldo turned back the hands of time and showed everyone he still packs a punch and still has plenty of gas left in the tank after knocking out Jeremy Stephens, which was set up by a precise liver shot that put “Lil’ Heathen” in trouble. After putting away “Lil Heathen,” Aldo was elated, as he broke into tears with his friends and camp surrounding him. Indeed, losing three in a row would've been detrimental to his career. Now that he’s back the win column, we can expect Jose to be a bit more calm and less tense, which means he is capable of putting on a more dominant victory next time around.
Biggest Loser: Jeremy Stephens.
Stephens was on the verge of earning his first-ever UFC title shot, but after Aldo knocked him out, “Lil’ Heathen” will have to start from scratch. It’s a tough loss indeed, as Stephen had clawed his way to the position of No. 1 contender with one important victory over another. Jeremy nearly snuck into a title fight a few weeks ago, but now it seems like his championship dreams are out of reach or now. He can work his way back up, but it will be twice as hard.
