In response to Alabama coach Nick Saban telling USA TODAY Sports that Central Florida's "self-proclaimed" national championship is "not the same as actually earning it," former UCF coach Scott Frost — now Nebraska's coach — casually jabbed back.
"Alabama probably has one or two national championships they claim that weren't necessarily recognized by everybody," Frost told the Omaha news station, KETV, on Thursday.
Frost's point alluded to the fact that of the 17 national championships Alabama's football program claims, several title teams came before the modern polling systems came about. Still, Frost previously acknowledged to USA TODAY Sports that, "at the end of the day, the Playoff system is that the national champion is the team that wins the Playoff."
Frost spearheaded UCF to a 13-0 campaign and the school's athletic director, Danny White, promoted the Knights as national champions by throwing a parade, paying coaches bonuses and issuing out championship rings to players. White's logic was that UCF, despite being snubbed from the four teams in the College Football Playoff, had beaten Auburn, a team that beat both Georgia and Alabama in 2017 before the two teams squared off in the Playoff's national championship game.
“We’ve only had one undefeated team, and that is really hard to do,” Saban said. “So I have a tremendous amount of respect for their team and what they were able to accomplish. … And they can make every claim that they should have been in the Playoff. I get that. But we have a system, and it’s not fair to the people who went through the system and earned their way playing really, really good teams — I mean really good teams — and really tough games. It’s not quite fair to them for somebody else just to decide to (claim a national championship).”
