Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Scott Frost took a shot at the Alabama Crimson Tide as the tongue-in-cheek debate about the 2017 national champions rolls on.

On Wednesday, Frost told KETV the Tide probably have "one or two championships they claim that weren't necessarily recognized by everybody:"

Frost was responding to Alabama head coach Nick Saban's comments to George Schroeder of USA Today that "self-proclaimed is not the same as actually earning it" after Frost's former team, the UCF Knights, claimed a national title last year upon completing an undefeated season.

Although there have been small jabs between the coaches, there doesn't seem to be any real animosity between the sides as the Tide prepare for their latest title defense.

In early May, Frost admitted to Schroeder there's a system in place to crown the college football champion and Alabama deserved it by winning the College Football Playoff.

"I completely get behind their argument," he said. "I do think it was almost criminal how low they kept UCF in the rankings, and I think it was intentional. But at the end of the day, the playoff system is that the national champion is the team that wins the playoff."

Meanwhile, Saban praised Frost's work with last year's UCF squad in his comments to USA Today.

"We've only had one undefeated team, and that is really hard to do," Saban said. "So I have a tremendous amount of respect for their team and what they were able to accomplish. … And they can make every claim that they should have been in the Playoff. I get that."

Frost didn't say which of the Tide's 17 claimed national titles could be disputed, but they won four before the poll era began in 1936. That includes 1926, when they tied fellow undefeated squad Stanford, which also claimed a title that year, in the Rose Bowl.

While UCF deserves full credit for running the table last season, it's a conversation that should fade away once the new season gets underway with Alabama as the reigning national champions.
