Eight horses are scheduled to break from the starting gates at 5:20 p.m. CDT Saturday in the 143rd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Here's a rundown on the field (arranged in post position):

Quip
Quip won his first two races, then ran a disappointing seventh as the second-favorite in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in his final race as a 2-year-old. The colt came back to win the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby at 19-1 to earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby. But after Quip ran second by 4 lengths to Magnum Moon at the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on April 14, the horse's handlers decided to hold Quip out of the Kentucky Derby and point for the Preakness. Trainer: Rodolphe Brisset. Jockey: Florent Geroux. Record: 5-3-1-0. Earnings: $482,800. Pedigree: Princess Ash by Distorted Humor.

The colt's showings against top competition include third in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity in October, fifth in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November, ninth in the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes in January, second by a neck to Noble Indy in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby in March and eighth in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby on May 5. 3. Sporting Chance
Sporting Chance ran on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs, but not in the big race. The colt finished fourth on May 5 in the Pat Day Mile. Sporting Chance has been an also-ran as a 3-year-old, hitting the board with a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes in February, finishing fifth in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes in March and coming in fourth in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes in April before the Pat Day. As a 2-year-old, Sporting Chance had two wins and a second, including a first-place finish in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes despite a bizarre shift to the right just yards before the wire. Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas, who has saddled six Preakness winners -- Codex in 1980, Tank's Prospect in 1985, Tabasco Cat in 1994, Timber Country in 1995, Charismatic in 1999 and Oxbow in 2013. Jockey: Luis Contreras. Record: 7-2-1-1. Earnings: $409,790. Pedigree: Wynning Ride by Tiznow.

4. Diamond King
Diamond King earned a spot in the Preakness by winning the Federico Tesio Stakes at nearby Laurel Park on April 21. Diamond King won three of his four races as a 2-year-old, when he lost his jockey in the first turn of his biggest race, the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. He's raced only twice as a 3-year-old, running third in the Grade 3 Swale Stakes on Feb. 3. Trainer: John Servis, who saddled 2004 Preakness winner Smarty Jones. Jockey: Javier Castellano, who has ridden two Preakness winners -- Bernardini in 2006 and Cloud Computing in 2017. Record: 6-4-0-1. Earnings: $222,600. Pedigree: Akron Moon by Quality Road.

5. Good Magic
Good Magic ran second to Justify in the Kentucky Derby. Good Magic won the Eclipse Award as the champion 2-year-old colt of 2017, when he ran to a 4.25-length victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile after going off as only the fifth-favorite in the wagering. Good Magic didn't start 2018 as well, though, running third in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 3 as a heavy favorite. He came back in his final Kentucky Derby prep race with a victory in the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes on April 7, winning by 1.5 lengths over Flameaway. Trainer: Chad Brown, who saddled last year's Preakness winner, Cloud Computing. Jockey: Jose Ortiz. Record: 6-2-3-1. Earnings: $2,255,000. Pedigree: Glinda the Good by Curlin. Curlin won the 2007 Preakness.

6. Tenfold
Tenfold did not race as a 2-year-old. After starting his career with two wins at Oaklawn Park, Tenfold's chances of running in the Kentucky Derby were ended by a fifth-place run in the Arkansas Derby his last time out on April 14. Trainer: Steve Asmussen, who saddled Preakness winners in 2007 with Curlin and 2009 with Rachel Alexandra. Jockey: Ricardo Santana Jr. Record: 3-2-0-0. Earnings: $124,200. Pedigree: Temptress by Curlin. Curlin won the 2007 Preakness.

7. Justify
Justify won the Kentucky Derby by 2.5 lengths on May 5, becoming the second winner -- and first since 1882 -- of the Run for the Roses that didn't race as a 2-year-old. After winning the first two times out by a combined 16 lengths, Justify earned his place in the Kentucky Derby by beating Bolt d'Oro by 3 lengths in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 7, then stayed undefeated by overcoming a sloppy track and 19 rivals at Churchill Downs. Trainer: Bob Baffert, who has saddled six Preakness winners -- Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998, Point Given in 2001, War Emblem in 2002, Lookin at Lucky in 2010 and American Pharoah in 2015. Jockey: Mike E. Smith, who rode Prairie Bayou to victory in the 1993 Preakness. Record: 4-4-0-0. Earnings: $2,098,000. Pedigree: Stage Magic by Scat Daddy.

Bravazo, right on by pic.twitter.com/UuKOp4gM83
-- Jeremy Balan (@BH_JBalan) May 16, 2018
8. Bravazo
Bravazo finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby even though 17 of the other 19 entrants went off at shorter odds. Bravazo had been the second-favorite in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby in the colt's final Kentucky Derby prep and finished eighth, nearly 21 lengths behind winner Noble Indy on March 24. Bravazo entered that race off a victory in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes in February, when he finished 2 lengths ahead of Noble Indy. Bravazo also laid an egg in his final race as a 2-year-old, finishing 10th in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, although at that point in his career, with one victory in his first four races, he was considered a long shot. Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas, who has saddled six Preakness winners -- Codex in 1980, Tank's Prospect in 1985, Tabasco Cat in 1994, Timber Country in 1995, Charismatic in 1999 and Oxbow in 2013. Jockey: Luis Saez. Record: 9-3-1-1. Earnings: $436,538. Pedigree: Tiz O' Gold by Awesome Again.
