Mets land a 2017 All-Star to bolster rotation depth

The Mets have found some insurance for their talented but fragile rotation.

They signed free agent pitcher Jason Vargas to a two-year, $16 million contract, pending a physical. There is a team option for a third season, ESPN reports.

Vargas, 35, went 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA and 1.33 WHIP for the Royals last season. He was selected to his first All-Star team, after posting a 2.62 ERA in the first half. He had missed most of the previous two seasons with injury, but pitched at least 150 innings in the five years prior to that and came back with 179 1/3 last year.

He also has past and present connections to the Mets after playing for them in 2007 and for new pitching coach Dave Eiland in Kansas City.
