Seahawks player tries to climb into stands in Jacksonville as game ends in ugliness

It would not be accurate to say that things got a little ugly at the end of Sunday’s Seahawks-Jaguars game. Things got a lot ugly, including an incensed Seattle player, Quinton Jefferson, trying to climb into the stands in Jacksonville.

Jefferson had been ejected with seconds left in his Seahawks’ 30-24 loss, and on his way from the field to the tunnel, he had drinks and other items thrown his way by fans. He moved toward the stands, then broke away from security and tried to scale a wall to get to the fans, who threw more items at him.

“I’m not going to let somebody disrespect me, throw a beer on me,” Jefferson said (via ESPN). “Just because I’m playing football, I’m still a human being. I’m still a man.”

Jefferson was ejected after crashing into the Jags’ offensive line as the team was taking a knee with the ball to run out the clock. His punishment might not have been so severe if officials weren’t concerned about reining in tempers, following a melee on the previous play.

On that play, the Seahawks first tried to disrupt Jacksonville’s kneel-down, and Seattle’s Sheldon Richardson drew the ire of several Jaguars. While that was happening, another Seahawk, Michael Bennett, appeared to roll on the back of Jacksonville center Brandon Linder’s leg, further intensifying the ill will.

In the aftermath of that scene, Bennett was given an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty and Richardson was ejected for throwing a punch, one play before Jefferson’s ejection. Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll was also given a penalty for running out onto the field.

“It’s really unfortunate how it ended. We had a chance to get the ball back. We have to be more poised than that,” Carroll said after the game.

On what he had to say to Jefferson about his altercation with fans, Carroll said, “I told him that’s pro football. They pay to get in they can do whatever they want I guess.”

Carroll said he had no idea if Jefferson would receive further punishment from the league. Bennett, the team’s nominee for the NFL’s annual man of the year award, could also hear from the league, as could Richardson, for endangering an opponent.

It was just the latest ugly scene for the NFL, which handed out punishments last week for excessively rough hits in a game between the Steelers and Bengals and which suspended the Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski one game for giving a Bills player a concussion by jumping on him out of frustration after a play had ended. Incidents earlier in the season included the Bengals’ A.J. Green throwing punches at the Jags’ Jalen Ramsey, and the Raiders’ Michael Crabtree squaring off with the Broncos’ Aqib Talib, sparking a melee.
