Blues call season-ticket holder for emergency goalie duty

Blues season-ticket holder Tyler Stewart probably would have been at Scottrade Center for the Stars game Thursday night anyway, but he wasn’t expecting to be in pads as St. Louis’ emergency goalie.

Stewart, who competes in an adult hockey league and formerly played goalie for St. Louis University’s club team, got a phone call from the Blues around 2 p.m. Thursday and was told his services were needed, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Backup goalie Carter Hutton sustained a lower-body injury during the morning skate and wouldn’t be ready to go, and No. 3 goalie Ville Husso’s flight from San Antonio was not scheduled to arrive in time for the game.

“I was completely caught off guard by it,” Stewart said of the phone call. “Just nuts is how I’d describe it. A dream come true obviously to be able to do the warmups. I thought maybe there was an off-chance I’d sit on the bench or do something like that. But it was awesome just to do the warmups.”

After signing an amateur tryout contract, Stewart put on the No. 98 jersey for warmups. When the game started, he was on standby in the locker room, but Husso made it to the team’s bench with about five minutes left in the first period. Had starter Jake Allen gotten injured before Husso arrived, the Blues would have put Stewart between the pipes.

Stewart said he would have relished the opportunity to get into the game, which the Blues won 3-0, but he didn’t want Allen to get hurt — he’s a Blues fan, after all.

“Even though I’m not an NHL-quality goalie, I would love to do it,” Stewart said.

Friday, we presume, Stewart will go back to being a grad student at Maryville University and working for his father’s vending machine company.
