The latest: The Giants legendary slugger died on Wednesday afternoon at the Stanford University Hospital after “a battle with ongoing health issues,” the team announced. Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan was with McCovey when he passed, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. McCovey, who had used a wheelchair for many years, was a senior advisor for the Giants for 18 years following his playing career. He attended the Giants’ season finale this year in San Francisco, but was rushed to a hospital during the game.

Giants great Barry Bonds’ reaction in tweets: “Mac, I am crying over losing you even when you told me not to. I remember asking you what I would do without all of you around. You told me when that day comes - and it will one day - to keep the tradition of Giants baseball living forever.

“You told me to help the next generation of ball players get better. You told me to be thankful that we had so much time to spend together and talk about the love we have for the game, San Francisco, the Giants and for each other. You wanted me to be happy that we had a love and friendship that will never disappear and will be in our hearts forever. The latest: The Mets general manager from 2011 through June 2018 is off the payroll as of Wednesday due to his one-year contract expiring on Oct. 31, Andy Martino of SNY reported. Alderson took a leave of absence in June due to his battle with a treatable form of cancer, then opted later in the season not to return. The Mets hired Brodie Van Wagenen to succeed Alderson on Oct. 29. According to Martino, Alderton will remain the chair of the MLB rules committee and part of baseball's competition committee.
