CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Receiver Julio Jones reached another milestone Sunday as the Atlanta Falcons played the Cleveland Browns. But the Browns' 28-16 victory put a damper on thoughts of any personal celebration for Jones.
“I’ve been playing OK but [the record] is not in my head right now,” said Jones, moments after Sunday’s game. “I’m trying to win ball games.”
After Jones made a 30-yard reception in the second quarter, he became the fastest receiver to achieve 10,000 yards (in 104 games). The previous mark was held by former Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, who did it in 115 games.
Receivers Antonio Brown and Torry Holt achieved 10,000 yards in 116 games.
For the day, Jones had 107 yards on seven catches and his second touchdown of the season. For the season, he has 933 yards on 60 receptions.
Just think: Jones could have caught passes for the Browns. The Falcons drafted Jones with the sixth overall pick in 2011. That was made possible after the Falcons traded five draft picks to the Browns.
Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is glad Jones is on his side.
“He’s amazing,” Ryan said. “He is a unique and special player. He’s as talented as probably any player who has ever played . . . It’s fun to have been a small part of what he has done.”
It was one of Jones’ better games of the season, but Browns coach Greg Williams was pleased with his game plan.
“The big thing was to try to understand conceptually what they were trying to do,” Williams said. “Stay on top of him and try to make it as difficult as possible to find him.”
