ESPN updates Football Power Index after Week 12

For the first time in three weeks, the College Football Playoff race took a major turn on Saturday.

West Virginia's loss at Oklahoma State takes the Mountaineers out of the conversation and brings Ohio State, Washington State and Oklahoma closer to the mix. The Buckeyes survived an overtime shootout at Maryland while the Cougars fired off 69 points against Arizona and the Sooners handled Kansas.

How does that affect this week's ESPN power rankings? Well, there's a new No. 1.

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.
