Arizona Cardinals release quarterback Sam Bradford

The Sam Bradford era in Arizona is over. Bradford, the quarterback who got a whopping $15 million guaranteed this offseason, has been released by the Cardinals today. It was always obvious to most people outside the Cardinals’ facility that the signing was a mistake. The Cardinals drafted Josh Rosen in the first round, which made [ more]

After taking a flier on oft-injured quarterback Sam Bradford over the offseason, the Arizona Cardinals released him Saturday, the team announced.

The Cardinals tried to shop Bradford, 30, at this week’s trade deadline but could not find any suitors willing to trade for Bradford’s services.

The Cardinals signed Bradford to a one-year deal worth $20 million back in March. Even though Arizona took a chance on signing Bradford, it selected quarterback Josh Rosen with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. At that point, most knew Bradford was on borrowed time.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they did not receive any return on their investment in Bradford. During his three-game stint as Arizona’s starting quarterback, he threw for 400 yards to go along with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Bradford was benched in favor of Rosen moments before the Cardinals lost to the Chicago Bears in Week 3. And Rosen kept the starting gig ever since. This is now Rosen’s team. The future arrived a lot quicker than Arizona probably expected.

As for Bradford, he’ll probably sign as a backup with another team. His entire career has been plagued with inconsistent play and multiple knee injuries. Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, had a up-and-down career — throwing for 19,449 yards, 103 touchdowns, and 61 interceptions in 83 regular-season games. Bradford’s NFL career is hanging by a thread.
