The Giants rebuild continued Wednesday morning, when the team traded nose tackle Damon Harrison to the Detroit Lions for a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Trading Harrison comes on the heels of the Giants dealing cornerback Eli Apple to the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday.
Moving Harrison frees up $7.75 million against the cap in 2018, and allows the Giants to move second-year defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson into the starting lineup.
Giants trade Apple, Harrison ... Who's next?
Following the two moves over the past two days, the Giants now own nine picks in the 2019 NFL Draft:
1st round: Giants own their own pick
2nd round: Giants own their own pick
4th round: Giants own their own pick and Saints pick
5th round: Giants own their own pick, the Detroit Lions' pick
6th round: Giants own their own pick
7th round: Giants own picks originally belonging to Rams and Vikings
Harrison enters Week 8 with 31 tackles, and over his three year career with the Giants owns 193 tackles with four sacks and one interception.
As Giants head coach Pat Shurmur explained following the Apple trade, the organization is looking to give younger players on the roster a chance to play over the second half of the season. They are also acquiring quite the war-chest to move up in the NFL Draft across various rounds.
"This will give an opportunity for some young players and newer players to have an opportunity to play," Shurmur said Tuesday. "Plus, as we kind of look at this thing moving forward, we'll have a draft pick – actually two draft picks, one next year and certainly one in 2020, in value."
