Yankees' CC Sabathia costs himself a shot at $500K by retaliating vs. Rays

In carrying out one of baseball's unwritten rules, New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia likely cost himself a chance to earn a $500,000 contract bonus.

Sabathia had hit Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Jake Bauers in the fifth inning with the Yankees up 7-0.

After Rays pitcher Andrew Kittridge threw a pitch that nearly hit Yankees catcher Austin Romine in the head in the top of the sixth, Sabathia hit Rays catcher Jesus Sucre in the leg in the bottom of the frame.

The veteran left-hander was instantly ejected, leaving him with a total of 153 innings pitched on the season -- just two innings short of reaching the bonus in his contract for getting to 155.

As he was walking off the field after being tossed, Sabathia pointed at the Rays dugout and could be seen saying, "That's for you" punctuated by an expletive.

Sabathia re-signed with the Yankees last winter on a one-year deal with a base salary of $10 million.

Incentive bonuses are common in MLB contracts and Sabathia, 38, had one in his that paid him $500,000 for reaching 155, 165, 175 and 185 innings this season.

If he wants to return for a 19th season next year, there may not have been a better way to make his case.
