STREAK-ENDING SATURDAY and other really fun stuff from college football Week 2

College football did not have a loaded schedule in Week 2, the first week in which it competes with a national mood fixated on the NFL. But the sport produced a lot of weird and fun things, many of which you can read about right here in this post.

Let us decree that this was STREAK-ENDING SATURDAY.

On three counts:

  • The Kansas Jayhawks beat Central Michigan at Central Michigan. It was KU’s first road win since a triumph at freaking UTEP in 2009. The program had lost 46 in a row away from Lawrence, in addition to losing almost every game played in Lawrence.
  • The Kentucky Wildcats beat Florida for the first time in 32 attempts, a dry spell that went back to UK’s last win in 1986. Refer to this list of 11 things that were happening at the time of the last Wildcat win in this series. One is that Top Gun was the highest-grossing movie. Another is that current Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley was 3.
  • A Michigan receiver caught a touchdown pass. It had been 364 days.

All of those streaks probably carry the same sentimental significance.

But let’s zero in on Kentucky, whose fans celebrated by a) flipping a car and b) reportedly putting a mannequin in a puddle and dancing in that puddle while not wearing clothes except for underwear.

People in Lexington were totally acting normal:

“Sparty Milly Rockin’ on Sparky” was a thing that happened.

This Michigan State player was so unbothered with what was going on in front of him, that he just decided to dance after an interception his team made:

BUT ALL HAIL THE NEW LEADERSHIP MODEL.

While you were likely in bed, Herm Edwards beat No. 15 Michigan State.

Minnesota sealed a win against Fresno State with a wild pick.

Fresno State had a chance to tie things up against Minnesota late in Minneapolis, but Antoine Winfield Jr. was having absolutely none of it.

The Gophers really might not have a better play all season, and it’s only Week 2.

Oh.

Florida State and Miami introduced new turnover items.

Florida State whipped out a turnover backpack against Samford. (This has been referred to as just a sideline trophy, not a turnover item. In this case, it’s both.)

And Miami’s got a new turnover chain, which features a bedazzled Sebastian the Ibis:

Also, there is a TURNOVER ELMER’S GLUE CHAIN.

And a TURNOVER CHALICE.

EMU became the first MAC team to beat a Power 5 team in the conference’s new PIRATE FLAG ERA.

EMU dropped Purdue and thus became the inaugural PIRATE FLAG TEAM. Buffalo also went ahead and waved this flag after beating Temple in Philadelphia:

Issa NAIA beatemdown.

Well, Nebraska, that’s one way to lose.

In a renewal of a kinda rivalry game, Colorado beat Nebraska, 33-28.

The Huskers should’ve had this thing just about locked, but a bad roughing penalty gave the Buffs a late shot, which they turned into this:

Earlier in that game, Colorado ran this smooth trick play — a reverse toss-back pass to the QB, which became a 28-yard throw down the left sideline.

Clemson and Texas A&M played a hell of a game.

For the Tigers, it began in style:

Clemson ultimately won, but A&M showed a lot. Aggies quarterback Kellen Mond became a one-man highlight reel, dropping dimes like this ...

... and this, among several others:

A&M ultimately lost in some part because of football’s worst rule, the one that dictates that offensive touchdowns through the other team’s end zone be ruled touchbacks. But in falling by just 2 to a regular Playoff team, Jimbo Fisher showed some proof of concept.

These two games were happening in the same sport at the same time:

Ole Miss gave up 38 points in the first half to an FCS team.

There will be no further comment on what happened after.

Larry Fedora’s UNC lost to ECU again, only this time, Fedora might not have any choice but to remember it.

UNC’s head coach said he had no memory of the last time his team lost to ECU (the Pirates hung 70 on the Heels). So to refresh his memory, ECU beat North Carolina again.

Tennessee fans got somewhat meta.

You see, it’s fans throwing fans.

This ref in Georgia-South Carolina got rocked.

At least give my man half a tackle on the stat sheet.

Nobody wanted to sit by this guy at the William & Mary-Virginia Tech game.

This good dog appeared at the same game.

The dog’s name is Bean. It belongs to a Hokie cheerleader.

This Houston player had a tremendous flop, or something.

This Division III game featuring Carleton College in Northfield, Minn., had some horticultural maintenance issues.

Gotta turn the sprinklers off, folks.

Georgia Tech and USF!

They played a barnburner in Tampa, with nine lead changed, 87 points, and 1,124 total yards of offense. QB Blake Barnett — previously of Bama and Arizona State — sealed the deal with this touchdown showing off his legs.

Barnett went 21-31 for 202 yards through the air. He added 91 yards on 16 carries on the ground. The final score was 49-38, Bulls.

Florida State honored Burt Reynolds in an awesome way.

They parked the car from Smokey And The Bandit right outside the stadium.

Then FSU honored Reynolds in a less good way, by almost losing to Samford.

A Ball State fan created a very self-aware shirt.

Listen, it’s always better to tease yourself before somebody else teases you.

Here is a bug on a camera lens at the Drake-Montana game.

Oklahoma’s Marquise “Hollywood Brown” ruined multiple UCLA defenders’ afternoons on this 58-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Kyler Murray:

This isn’t really “fun,” but it is weird: Liberty’s punter got ejected for a vicious targeting hit against Army.

Russell Westbrook, Trae Young, and Buddy Hield appeared at UCLA-Oklahoma in Norman, repping their various alma maters.

College GameDay included a Make-a-Wish recipient, Owen Gray, serving as the show’s guest picker.

He picked home team Texas A&M to beat Clemson and then likened Lee Corso his “crazy uncle.”

On Friday night, TCU-SMU became a Slip N Slide after lots of rain.

The Horned Frogs wound up winning in a romp, but not before this utterly doomed punt attempt ...

It was a sufficiently oddball start to a sufficiently oddball weekend.
