San Francisco 49ers fear Jimmy Garoppolo tore ACL during loss to Kansas City: Game recap, score, stats

Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes is just as efficient at home as he is on the road. He gets the same results, too.

After winning his first three starts, all away from Arrowhead Stadium, the second-year pro finally made his regular-season home debut Sunday. Mahomes responded by torching San Francisco's banged-up pass defense for 314 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-27 victory over the 49ers.

The may have come at a big price for the 49ers. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed after the loss that the team fears quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL. That would be a season-ending injury to the quarterback.

Garoppolo exited the game with a non-contact knee injury late in the fourth quarter.

Mahomes now has 13 touchdown passes without an interception, breaking the NFL record for TD passes in the first three weeks of a season. Peyton Manning threw 12 to start the 2013 campaign.

Mahomes' touchdown passes to Chris Conley, Demetrius Harris and Sammy Watkins, along with a pair of TD runs by Kareem Hunt, helped Kansas City (3-0) race to a 35-7 lead late in the first half.

Mahomes, the second-year player, tied a franchise record with six touchdown passes in Kansas City's (2-0) win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. Mahomes threw four touchdown passes in Week 1 and his 10 scoring passes set a NFL record for the first three games of a career. Mahomes' 10 touchdown passes are also the most ever by a quarterback through two games in NFL history.

Mahomes, is playing like a veteran by spreading the ball around. He has thrown touchdown passes to seven different receivers, including the lightning-fast Tyreek Hill, who has caught a team-leading three touchdown passes and returned a punt for a touchdown.

The 49ers (1-1) defeated the Detroit Lions 30-27, but nearly blew a 30-13 lead entering the fourth quarter in a win that cornerback Richard Sherman said felt more like a loss. They got lucky when Lions cornerback Tracy Walker intercepted a Garoppolo pass and returned to the San Francisco 7 with the 49ers leading 30-27 and 2:14 remaining. The Lions were called for defensive holding, wiping out the pick.

Garoppolo threw two touchdown passes in the game, but the big star was running back Matt Brieda. The second-year running back ran for 138 yards - including a 66-yard scoring run in the third quarter - on 11 carries in the game.
