Chiefs considered a favorite to land Earl Thomas, per report

The Kansas City Chiefs have yet to agree on the asking price the Seattle Seahawks are demanding in exchange for Earl Thomas, but they remain interested in acquiring the Pro Bowl safety and are considered a favorite to land him if the Seahawks decided to move him in a trade, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN Sunday morning.

Schefter reports the Seahawks are "stuck" on landing at least a second round pick for Thomas (Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Sunday the Seahawks are looking for two second-rounders or more), but the Chiefs, even though they have two second round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, aren't willing to meet that price. Despite that, Schefter says the Chiefs are still viewed in league circles as the frontrunner.

"The Cowboys offered a second-round pick at one point during the preseason, but Seattle wanted more from Dallas, especially considering that the teams were playing in Week 3," wrote Schefter in an article for ESPN.com. "But now that matchup has passed, and Kansas City has remained interested -- with other NFL executives handicapping the Chiefs as the favorite for multiple reasons. The Chiefs have an extra second-round pick from the Rams thanks to their Marcus Peters trade last year. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach is considered aggressive by many, and Kansas City is in the AFC, out of conference for Seattle."

The Chiefs have been shorthanded at safety since the preseason with projected starters Eric Berry and Daniel Sorensen both battling injury. Berry, who is coming off a torn Achilles that ended his 2017 season in Week 1, is dealing with a Haglund's deformity in his Achilles, according to a Saturday report from Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, while Sorensen is on injured reserve after undergoing knee surgery. With the Chiefs currently ranking last in the league in total defense (474 yards allowed per game), Thomas, who is a free agent after the season and is in the middle of a long contract dispute with the Seahawks, would be a significant addition to a team that has emerged as one of the AFC frontrunners after three weeks.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked during a media session last week about his thoughts on midseason trades and went into why he thinks they can be a positive move, but then finished by suggesting there was nothing in the works for Thomas or anyone else at the moment.

"I’ve left that up to Brett (Veach)… He’s aware of personality," Reid said. "He deals with all that stuff. He’s got all the data on all that. I remember one time when I was in Green Bay and we came back here and played the Chiefs, (Derrick) Thomas put (Don) Beebe in the fifth row (on a crossing route) and we were out of receivers. We went and got Andre Rison and ended up going to the Super Bowl and winning the Super Bowl, right? Kansas City destroyed us in that game – he had about five sacks or whatever it was, an unbelievable number – but I was a young coach, this was an in-season pickup that we had, and it worked out for us. It kind of showed me how those kind of things work at this level.

"So I’ve always kept my eyes open for that and been okay with that. I’ve been open to that. When I was making those decisions I was open to it, and I have full trust in Brett if he decides whoever that person is but right now we don’t have anything. That’s not where we’re at. I know the rumors out there but that’s not where we’re at."
