DeMarcus Cousins is still a Warrior. Has the NBA folded yet?

Wow, people are really mad about the Warriors signing DeMarcus Cousins to a contract. You’d understand if Pelicans fans were mad, especially after news that Cousins turned down a 2-year, $40 million extension offered after Boogie tore his Achilles. This Oleh Kosel piece on Cousins being unable to resist a bad breakup is righteous and indignant.

But everyone who is mad at the Warriors, and mad at the NBA for allowing this to happen ... seriously, what would you have the Warriors do? Say no? What would you have the NBA do? Invoke “basketball reasons” to preclude the signing?

As I wrote in my 23 thoughts on the move, this is a byproduct of the NBA’s soft salary cap that allows teams like the Warriors to exceed limits with certain exceptions, the NBA’s individual player max which caps what Steph Curry and Kevin Durant earn and leaves money for more Warriors, and the 2016 salary cap spike that rendered so many potential Boogie suitors strapped this summer.

Don’t be mad at the Warriors for adding talent under the rules of the NBA. Don’t be mad at Boogie for taking a shot at a title in a recovery year. Be mad at the system that allows this kind of chicanery.

Here’s the thing: the other system isn’t all that great either. Hard caps would create purgatory for teams that make bad bets and hurt the ability of teams to upgrade when necessary. Killing the individual max while leaving some kind of cap in place would mean watching an eternal loop of the 2017-18 Cavaliers, but with multiple teams like that across the league.

There are flaws in all of it. If this system’s flaw is a superpower Warriors squad (that happens to be excellent for ratings right now) ... well, count your blessings.

Boogie 4 America

Paul Flannery wrote that the Warriors grabbed Cousins because they can. Mike Prada explained why Boogie didn’t get an offer better than the Warriors’ $5.3 million. Kristian Winfield lays out the many losers and few winners of the deal. Matt Ellentuck fully lays out how the 2016 cap spike made this possible.

The Cousins deal won’t break the NBA of today, but what about the NBA of tomorrow? How does the Boogie contract affect the Rockets? Twenty-nine things that should have stopped this from happening. And finally, el ciervo joven Harry Lyles Jr. on why Boogie finally has a chance to be happy.

Links Galore

Dwight Howard is a Wizard, which leads us to wonder whether a negative Wizards locker room and a negative locker room presence in Howard just cancel each other out.

We have a trade! The Nuggets sent Wilson Chandler into the Sixers’ cap space. Word to the temporary Sixers front office. Huge tax savings for the Nuggets.

Nathaniel Friedman tries to make sense of the Cousins move.

This Scooter Magruder free agency reaction video is incredible.

Good joke by the Timberwolves.

David Dennis on LeBron’s black power play.

What should Cleveland replace the LeBron banner with?

Max extension for Devin Booker.

Dante Exum stays with the Jazz. Utah was able to retain both of its key free agents (Exum and Derrick Favors) on reasonable deals. Wildly underrated front office.

And finally: this message from Cedi Osman to LeBron is just so darn sweet.

Be excellent to each other.
