Aleksandr Golovin and the stars you’ll be watching

Golovin was one of the huge stars of the first round of group action, with two incredible assists and a jaw-dropping free kick goal during Russia’s 5-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia. He’ll be facing a tougher opponent in Egypt this time around, one that’s now had a chance to see him play at a high level and may have a better idea of how to stop him than a badly unprepared Saudi side did. If he can keep up the form he’s in, Russia might be a lot tougher to stop than many observers thought they would be.

Speaking of Egypt, everyone will be on Mo Salah watch after he was held out of their late loss to Uruguay. He was supposed to be available after being reported to have recovered from the shoulder injury that cut his Champions League final appearance short, but was left on the bench when Egypt were in desperate need of a change of pace in their search for a goal in the second half of their World Cup opener.

One of Salah’s club teammates at Liverpool, Senegal winger Sadio Mane, will be hoping to lead his national team to glory in a tough match against a Poland side that’s well balanced and well coached, but has had issues executing in key moments in the past. With Senegal a very opportunistic side, Poland will need to be sharper than ever to avoid starting their World Cup bid with disappointment. The same can be said for Colombia, who scraped their way into World Cup qualification after a difficult campaign in South America’s CONMEBOL qualifying, and start their tournament against a tough-but-recently-floundering Japan side. Both of the Group H matches have plenty of promise and pitfalls for each team involved, making them potentially some very fun and watchable matches.
