Recently a new guy showed up at a Ventura Community College football practice. He wasn’t difficult to spot with his long hair, tats a-plenty, gumdrop-sized mole on his right cheek and obnoxious attitude. If you’re of a certain age you might flash on Spicoli from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.”

The new guy, a transfer quarterback, sidled up to No. 13. “I want to get those quarterbacks a little nervous,” the new guy said. “What are you, the punter?”

“No,” No. 13 said, sounding a little put out. “I’m a quarterback.”

Not all was as it appeared that day. The new guy was Jared Goff, former Cal quarterback selected by the Los Angeles Rams with the first pick of the 2016 NFL draft. His appearance at practice, documented by a video crew, was a prank. Only head coach Steven Mooshagian and director of football operations Robert Mooshagian were in on the joke.

“I have a feeling I’m not going to be very popular,” Goff said inside a motor home while the hair, tattoos and mole were put into place. “They’re going to have no idea.”

At first, Goff, by design, made some iffy throws. He told a disbelieving assistant coach, “Normally what happens is my hair falls down on my right side, so sometimes the right side of the field is out for me.” Eventually, Goff unleashed a volley of dazzling throws that brought the practice to life.

There’s more, including the reveal, but it works better in video form. Thankfully, we happen to have a copy. Enjoy:
