Quarterback Kirk Cousins' departure from Washington was all but assured when the Redskins acquired Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs, but the free-agent signal-caller made it official with a post on his website Monday.

"The team has decided to move on to another option and, in turn, my family and I will be moving on as well," Cousins writes in a blog post titled "Farewell, Washington."

NFL free agency officially begins Wednesday afternoon and the six-year veteran already has several interested suitors. Cousins tagged the N.Y. Jets and Minnesota Vikings in his original post, but later removed them.

Cousins, 29, is coming off his third consecutive season of at least 4,000 yards passing and 25 touchdowns. However, critics have pointed to his late-season struggles and the fact the Redskins only made the playoffs once with him as a starter.

"Though we are ultimately measured on a win-loss record, my fondest memories will be the little achievements and struggles that got us there … the everyday memories that made the job fun," Cousins said.

Even though the relationship with the Redskins front office may have been strained with Cousins receiving the franchise tag twice and never coming close to a long-term deal, he offered nothing but praise in his farewell message:

"There is no way I would be where I am today without the leadership of the Redskins organization … Coach Gruden, Bruce Allen, Dan Snyder. Thank you all for the opportunity you gave me. When (his son) Cooper someday asks: 'Hey Dad, what was it like playing for the Redskins?' I’ll proudly tell him it was a dream come true."
