Tucked into Vince Young’s bitter on-shitting of former head coach Jeff Fisher last summer was Young’s assertion that he’d once sent Fisher a letter “apologizing for his immaturity,” and that the letter had gone unanswered, which apparently indicated to Young that Fisher “doesn’t give two shits” about him. Well, it turns out Fisher did, in fact, receive the letter, but didn’t reply to it, in part, because Young misspelled Fisher’s last name:
“Yes, I got a letter from Vince,” Fisher said. “And I didn’t respond. My name was spelled wrong on the letter, the letter came from the University of Texas, and I had no way of knowing if it was (really) from him. It came from the athletic department. But my name was spelled incorrectly.
“I still have it. But I didn’t know if it was from him so I felt no need to respond.”
Fisher – not Fischer – said he gets a lot of mail.
“I thought if it was from him he would have maybe spelled my name right,” he said.
Fisher, the very human embodiment of coaching mediocrity, talked to NFL reporter Paul Kuharsky for Kuharsky’s personal website, and finally got into Young’s Sports Illustrated ether-ing, in which he accused Fisher of betrayal and unfairness and generally depicted him as a petty and petulant person. Gotta say, not responding to an apology letter because someone adds a “c” to your last name is not going to do much to counteract that depiction. The rest of Fisher’s explanation for not rebutting or in any way responding to Young’s comments has the same reek of haughty, sneering falseness:
“I’ve been asked many, many times to comment in response to three of his comments, and I had nothing to gain by commenting because all three of his comments were false, they were not true,” he said. “I know the truth, so I stayed away from all that.”
I have never commented on whether I am a dirtbag piece of shit because I have nothing to gain by preventing that assertion from going unchallenged is an incredibly bad and dumb reason for not telling “the truth.” At any rate, I’m sure now that Jeff Fisher knows for sure that the letter did, in fact, come from Vince Young, he will get right on crafting a mature and conciliatory response. Yup. Probably we would all be a lot happier if these two men never spoke of one another ever again.
