Spare the debate.
The usual No. 1 seed chatter really isn't necessary this March, as the teams with the best profiles have all but secured their top seeds on Selection Sunday — hours away from the show.
Expect to hear Virginia, Villanova, Kansas and Xavier. North Carolina made a nice push by beating Duke and reaching the ACC tournament title game, but it would have taken a win against Virginia for there to be a heavy discussion by committee members. That's because the Tar Heels just have too many losses (10) compared with Xavier (five). This is where the recency effect can get in the way of what the committee is really looking at in the full body of work.
BRACKETOLOGY: Projecting the full field of 68
Here's a look at the four No. 1s and their NCAA tourney credentials:
1a) Virginia
If it weren't already evident before, Saturday night's ACC tournament title victory vs. North Carolina punctuated the Cavaliers' already secure spot as the top overall seed. Virginia (31-2, 17-1) has the best RPI in the country and has only lost twice.
1b) Villanova
The Wildcats (30-4, 14-4) secured the bracket's second top seed after holding off Providence in overtime of the Big East tournament final. Villanova has a good résumé that features the country's second-best RPI and the best non-conference RPI.
1c) Kansas
The 14-time regular-season Big 12 champs added the league's tournament championship (beating West Virginia in the title game) to its list of accolades for a season that looked shaky early. The Jayhawks (27-7, 13-5) have the No. 2 strength of schedule and are the most battle tested, hailing from the country's toughest conference — RPI wise and nine out of 10 teams were in the mix for NCAA bids this year.
1d) Xavier
The Big East's regular-season champ suffered an early conference tournament exit to Providence but still have the credentials. The Musketeers (28-5, 15-3) have a solid non-conference win vs. likely No. 2 seed Cincinnati to mesh with no bad losses.
