Giants suspend CB Eli Apple for season finale

The New York Giants have suspended cornerback Eli Apple for one game for "a pattern of behavior that is conduct detrimental to the team."

Kevin Abrams, the Giants' interim general manager, announced the disciplinary action Wednesday. The Giants said Apple would sit out Sunday's season finale against the Washington Redskins.

Apple had an argument with coaches at practice Wednesday, including cornerbacks coach Tim Walton, sources told ESPN's Jordan Raanan and Dan Graziano. This was part of the "behavior that is conduct detrimental to the team" but not the only reason for the suspension, the sources said.

Apple was notified that he was being suspended in a Wednesday afternoon meeting with Abrams and interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo, the team said in a statement.

The suspension comes just hours after Pro Bowl safety Landon Collins apologized for calling Apple "a cancer," saying in a tweet that he will "never stop supporting" the embattled cornerback.

Collins posted his conciliatory tweet one day after criticizing Apple during a radio interview with 98.7 ESPN New York.

Spagnuolo, who replaced the fired Ben McAdoo earlier this month, said he spoke with Apple on Wednesday morning before having a "really good conversation that was really productive" with both Apple and Collins. He also thought Apple and Collins could "absolutely" coexist on the roster and in the meeting room in the future.

Apple is the third cornerback to be suspended by the Giants this season. McAdoo suspended both Janoris Jenkins and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie earlier in the season.
