Giancarlo Stanton nixes trades to Cardinals and Giants; list of suitors adds three new teams

Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings don’t begin until Sunday, but wheels are already spinning. Hot on the heels of Japanese star Shohei Otani agreeing to a deal with the Los Angeles Angels comes word that baseball’s other biggest prize, National League MVP Giancarlo Stanton, has exercised his no-trade clause to put the kibosh on potential trades that his current team, the Miami Marlins, had already agreed upon.

Following a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal Thursday night, Stanton overruled trades to the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals Friday, narrowing a list of potential new destinations while dealing a major blow to the only organization he’s ever played for, one that lavished upon him a 13-year, $325 million contract in November 2014. In addition to that record amount of coin, Miami also included the no-trade provision, which is why it will have a tougher time getting out from under the remainder of money still owed to Stanton, regardless of where he winds up.

Both the Cardinals and the Giants released statements signaling their failures to procure Stanton, with Cardinals chairman and CEO Bill DeWitt and General Manager John Mozeliak expressing disappointment that they “were not able to convince Stanton to waive his no-trade clause.” The Giants said simply, “Our agreement with the Marlins to acquire Giancarlo Stanton subject to his waiving of the no-trade clause will not move forward, and it is our understanding that the Marlins and Stanton are exploring other options.”

Rosenthal also reported that Stanton would be interested in waiving the no-trade to go to the Yankees or Dodgers, while Sirius XM’s Craig Mish added the Astros and Cubs to the list. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that as part of their offer, the Cardinals offered to pick up over $300 million on the remainder of Stanton’s contract, while the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold reported that figure was closer to $250 million. Which brings us back to the Marlins.

New ownership, fronted by Derek Jeter, is clearly interested in cutting payroll after a 77-85 record in 2017, the franchise’s eighth consecutive losing season. Earlier this week, the Marlins traded second baseman Dee Gordon to the Mariners for three prospects, but, perhaps more importantly, convinced Seattle brass to pick up the remaining $38 million on Gordon’s contract, which has three years left to go.

It’s not clear whether the Giants would have assumed any of Stanton’s contract. Abundantly clear, however, is the fact that Stanton will have a big say in where he plays next season.
