The Detroit Lions held off a late comeback attempt from the Chicago Bears to win, 20-10. Detroit was dominant on both sides of the ball, and Matthew Stafford threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns.
Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky had an up-and-down performance — throwing for 314 yards to go along with a touchdown and three interceptions. There were multiple big moments in this game, but Detroit made the most plays on both sides of the ball.
Trubisky tried to drive the Bears down the filed late in the fourth quarter to score, but he threw another interception to Darius Slay to end the game.
Even though the Bears failed their onside kick attempt, their defense made the Lions punt the ball. The Bears have the football deep in their own territory, with a little more than two minutes left on the clock.
Lions 20, Bears 10: Better late than never, right? The Bears FINALLY scored their first touchdown of the game with a Benny Cunningham nine-yard touchdown catch.
Golden Tate added insult to injury with this ridiculous run. Man, he broke Kyle Fuller's ankles. After the play, Tate celebrated by performing his own version of a pirouette.
Trubisky made some great throws late in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, though, he threw an interception in the back of the end zone to Quandre Diggs. Chicago is allergic to touchdowns!
Lions 20, Bears 3: Detroit capitalized on that turnover with an Eric Ebron eight-yard touchdown reception.
Mitchell Trubisky threw an interception to Darius Slay on his first throw of the second half. Now, the Lions are in Bears territory.
Detroit will go into the locker room with a 10-point lead, but the Bears had the last laugh in the first half.
Lions 13, Bears 3: Chicago capitalized on the turnover and scored a field goal. The Bears will receive the ball to start the second half.
The Bears' defense forced a Theo Riddick fumble, setting them up in field goal position with less than 15 seconds on the clock.
Lions 13, Bears 0: Finally, Detroit scored a touchdown with a T.J. Jones three-yard catch. And the Lions' Rockettes celebration was great.
The Lions' offense is alive! Stafford rolled out the pocket on third down to launch this 58-yard pass to Marvin Jones Jr. Detroit is now in the red zone.
Well, Chicago's offense has yet to move the ball past midfield. And Detroit's defense is barely breaking a sweat today.
Lions 6, Bears 0: Detroit did well enough on offense to get into the red zone towards the end of the first quarter. But the offense couldn't cross the goal line. Once again, the Lions scored a field goal.
Chicago's offense came onto the field for its first drive, but it could barely move the ball. As usual, the Bears were forced to punt.
Lions 3, Bears 0: The Lions moved the all well on their first drive, but they will have to settle for three points.
Detroit received the ball first. Now, Matthew Stafford & Co. will get to take the field.
The Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions are two entirely different teams at this point in the season. Chicago is in the midst of rebuilding the franchise around rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and running back Jordan Howard. The Lions are fighting for their playoff lives in the competitive NFC.
But these two teams do not like one another and will battle in an NFC North showdown on Saturday at 4:30. The NFL Network (and NBC in local markets) will broadcast the game live from Ford Field. You can live stream the game via fuboTV.
Chicago (4-9) is having a better season than most expected. Trubisky threw for 1,508 yards to go along with six touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games. His passer rating is 80.0, but his performance this season wasn't enough to fully revive Chicago's offense.
But even though the Bears offense ranks 30th in the league, their defense is at least above-average. It is ranked ninth against the pass and 14th against the run. And the Bears surrendered only 21.1 points per game this season.
Detroit (7-6), however, is currently the No. 8 seed in the NFC playoff race and needs to win out to have a shot at playing in the postseason. The Lions pass offense, led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, is the fourth-best in the NFL. But their rush offense ranks dead last. Detroit needs to find a spark in the run game to attack Chicago's stout defense. On the other side of the ball, the Lions must stop Chicago’s run game to continue to challenge a relatively inexperienced Trubisky.
“What makes Golden Tate so dangerous is that once he catches the ball, he’s as elusive as any receiver in the league,” Sherman wrote. “He breaks a ton of tackles, and he just knows how to make guys miss.”
According to Pro Football Focus, Tate has 20 total broken tackles in 2017, seven more than any other receiver.
“I remember when he was still with us in Seattle and he caught a screen against the Vikingswhere he made four dudes miss — made two of them run into each other, which was pretty funny,” Sherman wrote.
That offensive game plan used and executed on Sunday by the Chicago Bears sure seemed a bit different than the crap we’ve seen most of the 2017 season.
Maybe they’re starting to trust rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, which allows them to finally take the handcuffs off.
Then again, maybe the health of the wide receiving corps is allowing them to open things up a bit now.
Or it simply could have been the bad and injured defense of the Bengals that allowed Chicago’s offense to rack up a season high 482 yards and 33 points.
Whatever the reason, John Fox and his Fox-ball wasn’t Foxing up the game plan on Sunday.
Cohen has been the only consistent electrifying playmaker on the Bears, as he’s provided us with plenty of “wow” moments already this year. He’s the first NFL rookie to score a rushing, receiving, passing and punt return touchdown in a single season since Bears’ Hall of Famer Gale Sayers did it in 1965.
Read Again https://www.sbnation.com/2017/12/16/16778514/lions-bears-2017-live-scores-results-highlightsI think the Lions have dramatically cut down on drops this season. Drops have plagued Matthew Stafford and the Lions for years. This season, however, they’ve been one of more efficient teams in the NFL.
