Kevin Durant is finally at peace.
In an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report, the Warriors star opened up about his journey from Oklahoma City to the Bay Area, saying the hardship and criticism he endured on his way to an NBA title made him the player he is today.
"Once we won, I'm expecting something to take the place of what I thought was empty," Durant said. "Now I know. It's cool to do, but the journey is better than the destination. So much happened that got me to this point that means way more to me than a championship. That was my revelation when we won. I had to tell myself it was cool to feel that way. Everything I did led me to where I am."
Durant, who earned his first NBA championship in addition to Finals MVP honors with Golden State in June, was viewed as disloyal to the Thunder after he left the team that drafted him for the Warriors in search of a ring. But the eight-time All-Star claims loyalty in the league is nothing more than an illusion, saying money has masked the game in recent years.
"Ain't no such thing [as loyalty]," Durant said. "You see disloyalty in different ways, but that's one of the most underrated parts of the game. We scream loyalty, but we don't expect it from the people writing the checks because they're writing the checks. [People say] 'You should be fine with it because you're getting paid.'
"I liked it better when I was naive about the NBA business, how f—ed up it is. That was better for me that way. … You put money and business into something that's pure, it's going to f— it up."
While Durant has yet to connect with those he left behind following his departure from Oklahoma City, he holds no grudges and doesn't rule out a reconciliation in the future.
"Those people really mean a lot to me to this day," Durant said. "No matter if they talk to me or they're mad at me. Whether it's Sam Presti or Troy Weaver or Russell Westbrook or Nick Collison. Whether it's Wilson Taylor or Clay Bennett and his family, I love them from the bottom of my heart. We're not talking, but eventually we will."
