Texas cannot hold off Oklahoma, loses 39-27: Post-game commiseration thread - Burnt Orange Nation

As is usually the case, the matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners turned into an instant classic, with the Sooners coming out on top in the Big 12 Championship, 39-27

Texas controlled the first quarter of the game, holding the Sooners without a touchdown for the first time in 28 games. However, Oklahoma came roaring back in the second half and took a 20-14 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was much kinder to the Longhorns, with Texas outscoring OU 13-7 to take a 27-27 tie into the fourth quarter. But once again the fourth quarter was not kind to the Longhorns, and a safety on Sam Ehlinger gave Oklahoma the ability to extend its lead to five points. After the free kick, Oklahoma put together a more than six-minute scoring drive to take an 11-point lead.

The Longhorns put together a late drive to try and score, but an overthrow from Ehlinger was intercepted and Oklahoma kneeled the game out.

Despite the way the game ended, early on Texas managed to exploit an overmatched and outsized OU secondary for big plays and built a big lead. After a few quiet weeks, it was Collin Johnson’s turn to show out, putting together a Big 12 Championship-record performance with 177 yards on eight receptions and a touchdown. Ehlinger, for the two big mistakes late, put together another incredible performance, going 23-36 for 349 and two touchdowns, adding 42 yards and another two scores on the ground.

Defensively, Texas managed to contain the Oklahoma offense, becoming just the second team in the conference to hold the Sooners under 40 points. However, the Longhorns gave Oklahoma new life on several offensive possessions by way of penalty.

Senior quarterback Kris Boyd was flagged for four 15-yard penalties, three directly extending drives and one negating a holding penalty that could have arrested the Oklahoma momentum. Overall, Texas was flagged for 15 penalties for 168 yards, compared to just five for 60 yards from Oklahoma.

Texas now waits to find out its bowl fate, as Oklahoma looks to head into the College Football Playoff.
