Redskins QB Alex Smith undergoes successful surgery; faces 6-8 months of recovery

Redskins quarterback Alex Smith underwent a successful surgery on his broken leg Monday and the team expects him to make a full recovery, coach Jay Gruden announced.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Smith suffered a compound fracture, which left bone protuding through his skin. Gruden said his recovery is expected to take six to eight months.

Smith suffered a broken tibia and fibula Sunday against the Texans while being sacked in the third quarter.

The Redskins, who fell 23-21 to the Texans, have signed veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez to back up Colt McCoy.
