Los Angeles (AFP) - Legendary former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman believes the struggling NFL giants need a complete overhaul to revitalize their fortunes after a crushing home defeat left the team facing another season of disappointment.
The Cowboys were subjected to boos and catcalls from their fans on Monday after slumping to a 28-14 home loss at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington against the Tennessee Titans.
The defeat left the misfiring Cowboys with a 3-5 record in the NFC East and facing a failure to reach the playoffs for a second straight year.
Aikman, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys during the team's era of dominance in the early 1990s, told Dallas radio station 1310 The Ticket on Tuesday that the defeat reflected the franchise's steady decline.
"Go through the list and this team, over a long period of time, has been what it's been," Aikman said.
"It hasn't always mattered who the head coach has been. So to me, if you're asking me, I'd say there has to be a complete overhaul of the entire organization."
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Monday ruled out replacing head coach Jason Garrett during the regular season but admitted he was frustrated by results.
However Aikman said the problems ran deeper than coaching and personnel.
"I've heard Jerry (Jones) say, 'OK, look, we're going to do it differently. I'm going to do it differently.' ... But it's the same. Nothing changes," Aikman said.
"And that to me is the bigger issue. ... Yes, coaching is important, personnel, all those things are important, but how are you going about evaluating how you're going about running the organization?
"I talk to people. I talk to people who have been inside the building and have a pretty good understanding how things are run, and in a lot of ways there's a lot of dysfunction, and that has to change if this team is going to be able to compete on a consistent basis like the teams that you look to around the league that seemingly are in the hunt each and every year."
Meanwhile Cowboys coach Garrett said Tuesday he was not concerned about his job security.
"I'm just focused on getting our team to play as well as we can play," said Garrett. "We'll learn from that experience (Monday) and get our eyes forward to Philadelphia."
