North Carolina fires football coach Larry Fedora after 2-9 season

Larry Fedora is out as head coach at North Carolina, the university announced Sunday.

The Tar Heels are 2-9 this season, after a 34-28 overtime loss Saturday to rival North Carolina State. This season's disappointment follows a 3-9 season in 2017.

Fedora was 45-43 in seven years at North Carolina, including an 11-3 season in 2015 that sent the Tar Heels to the ACC title game. He is 79-62 in 11 seasons overall as a head coach.

“We appreciate all that Larry Fedora has done for us over the last seven years — coming to Carolina in the midst of an NCAA case and bringing stability to our football program when we most needed it,’’ athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. “Despite injuries, despite setbacks and hardships, Larry never made excuses. He focused his teams on overcoming adversity, and I deeply respect the way he persevered and led our program each day with integrity through some tough times. This was not an easy decision because of the deep affinity I have for Larry. It simply is time to take our football program in a new direction.”

Cunningham met with Fedora on Sunday morning to inform him of the decision.

Fedora has four years left on his contract and is owed $3 million per year over the next four years.

Cunningham said he will have no further comment until a new head coach is hired.
