JR Smith done in Cleveland as Cavaliers attempt to trade veteran guard

The eyes of the NBA are watching Cleveland on the eve of LeBron James’ highly-anticipated return with the Los Angeles Lakers. One day before the big game, however, the story isn’t about James.

It’s about his former teammate JR Smith.

Smith, who won a title in 2016 alongside James, doesn’t think the Cavaliers are trying to win. One day after a story on The Athletic detailed Smith’s lack of a relationship with general manager Koby Altman and reiterated his desire to be traded, the Cavaliers released a statement saying in part: “Smith will no longer be with team as the organization works with JR and his representation regarding his future.”

In the Athletic story, Smith said he no longer wanted to be a part of the organization “if the goal isn’t to compete, to win.”

“I don’t think the goal is to win. The goal isn’t to go out there and try to get as many wins as you can,” Smith said. “I think the goal is to develop and lose to get lottery picks. I think that was always the plan.”

The Cavs currently sit at 2-13, the worst record in the NBA.

The 33-year-old Smith is averaging just 6.7 points per game, a career low. In Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Pistons, he played just six minutes. Smith, who requested a trade earlier this month, will work out privately until the situation is resolved.

According to ESPN, a buyout is not currently being discussed. Smith is set to earn $14.7 million this season, and $3.8 million of his $15.6 million salary is guaranteed for next season.
