NFL players go through a lot to suit up sometimes.
The Houston Texans sent quarterback Deshaun Watson on a 12-hour bus ride to Jacksonville for their game against the Jaguars instead of having him fly. According to Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, the team was worried about the air on a flight affecting him due to a bruised lung and rib injuries.
The bus ride isn’t the craziest part of the story, though it’s highly unusual. It’s that a team was so worried about Watson’s injuries that they wouldn’t let him on a plane, yet he started and faced a Jaguars defense full of Pro Bowlers trying to drive him into the ground every play.
Don’t forget this is a dangerous job.
Watson has been through a couple ACL injuries and now there’s this. He started as usual on Sunday and had a solid first half, helping the Texans to a 13-0 halftime lead on the road. He was 7-of-11 for 80 yards in the first half, including a nice sideline pass to DeAndre Hopkins that Hopkins made a great one-handed catch on. He hit Hopkins on a touchdown early in the third quarter to push Houston’s lead to 20-0.
We shouldn’t underestimate Watson’s toughness. Hopefully he doesn’t have to spend the whole season riding buses like a minor-league baseball player.
