NSAC will also be filing a formal complaint against Conor McGregor for UFC 229 brawl

Conor McGregor may have had his $3 million check handed to him after it was briefly withheld following an ugly scene after UFC 229 last Saturday (Oct. 6, 2018) in Las Vegas, Nevada, but “Notorious” isn’t out of the woods just yet.

According to Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) chairman Anthony Marnell, the governing body of Nevada combat sports will also be filing a formal complaint against the Irishman — not just against Khabib Nurmagomedov — for his part in the post-fight madness that ensued after “The Eagle” choked him out (see it).

“We will be filing against Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov,” Marnell told ESPN. “Because we withheld one purse, we will have to move expeditiously to a complaint and hearing. We have held 100 percent of one of the fighter’s money, so the goal is to get the complaints out in the next 24 to 48 hours.”

According to Marnell, the commission’s decision to go after McGregor was decided after further tape was reviewed showing various angles of the brawl. Initially, all of the finger-pointing was aimed at Nurmagomedov (as well as UFC itself) for jumping over the cage in an attempt to get at “The Notorious” camp. A few moments later, three members of Khabib’s camp were seen inside the Octagon taking swings at McGregor.

It wasn’t until later in the evening that another video surfaced showing McGregor taking a swing at a member of Nurmagomedov’s camp first (see it), which prompted the two other men to leap the cage to attack the former “champ-champ.”

Though the drama started months before.

Marnell revealed that despite the men who were arrested getting released because of McGregor’s unwillingness to press charges, they will still be dealt with in a legal matter.

“There are a lot of things here,” Marnell said. “There are a lot of charges that can be brought against a spectator who came over the barricade, through the commission section and into the Octagon to strike a fighter three times. For the record, I have a massive problem with that. That cannot happen,” he said.

Bragging about it on social media probably won’t help his case.

”We’re taking a really hard look at that gentleman. We know exactly who he is and where he is. I have to let the attorney general determine -- is that trespassing, disturbing the peace? That was a serious action and it deserves a serious consequence.”

As far as Nurmagomedov is concerned, Marnell revealed that NSAC would be looking at fining and suspending him for his actions.

“Both. It’s always both. We could do one or the other, but at least in the chair’s mind, I think the commission will be entertaining a recommendation from the attorney general that will include both,” he added.

”This is a serious issue, this is not a light issue. This isn’t, ‘We smacked each other in the face in a hotel lobby the week of a fight.’ This is the night of the event, and it needs to stay inside that field of combat. There are serious regulations and statutes about what took place, and the consequences have to match the actions.”

Marnell further revealed that the disciplinary hearings could go down at the end of November.
