John McClain's NFL power rankings: Week 5

The Texans moved up five spots after last week's overtime win over the Colts. The Cowboys, who are at NRG to face the Texas this week, are also on the rise.

1. L.A. Rams (4-0) | Last week: 1

The highest-scoring team in the league averages 35 points a game. The Rams play three in a row on the road, starting with Seattle.

2. Kansas City (4-0) | Last week: 2

Second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes has 14 touchdown passes after engineering a 10-point comeback in a Monday victory at Denver.

3. New Orleans (3-1) | Last week: 4

The red-hot Saints are averaging 34.2 points a game. Their rabid fans can't wait until they play the Rams in New Orleans on Nov. 4.

4. Tennessee (3-1) | Last week: 6

After beating Philadelphia, they play five of seven on the road. The home games during that stretch are against the Ravens and Patriots.

5. Jacksonville (3-1) | Last week: 7

After playing three in a row at home, the Jaguars return to the road against Kansas City and Dallas before hosting the Texans.

6 . Baltimore (3-1) | Last week: 9

In their three victories, the surprising Ravens are averaging 33.3 points a game. They're surrendering 10.3 a game.

7 . New England (2-2) | Last week: 14

The Patriots obliterated Miami 38-7, the first of three consecutive games at Gillette Stadium. Next up are Indianapolis and Kansas City.

8. Chicago (3-1) | Last week: 13

In the Bears' first three games, Mitchell Trubisky threw two touchdown passes. He threw six in Sunday's victory over Tampa Bay.

9. Cincinnati (3-1) | Last week: 18

The Bengals have a chance to get on a serious roll. After winning at Atlanta, they play four of their next five games at home.

10. Carolina (2-1) | Last week: 8

The Panthers play four NFC East teams in their first six games. They've got the Giants, Washington and Eagles in consecutive weeks.

11. Green Bay (2-1-1) | Last week: 16

Despite having Aaron Rogers at quarterback, the Packers have scored only 13 points in the first quarter going into their Detroit game.

12. Washington (2-1) | Last week: 12

Washington has allowed sevent points in the first quarter. It has scored three points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth.

13. Miami (3-1) | Last week: 3

Despite their 3-1 record, the slow-starting Dolphins have scored only seven points in the first quarter. Next up is Cincinnati.

14 L.A. Chargers (2-2) | Last week: 21

It should be illegal what's happening to the Chargers' players. When they play at home, the stadium is full of opposing fans. So unfair.

15. Dallas (2-2) | Last week: 23

Beginning with the Texans on Sunday night, the Cowboys play three of their next four games against teams from the AFC South.

16. Seattle (2-2) | Last week: 22

The Seahawks bring a two-game winning streak into their home game against the Rams. Russell Wilson has been sacked 16 times.

17. Philadelphia (2-2) | Last week: 5

The Eagles lost in overtime at Tennessee and host Minnesota. Doug Pederson says they need to play with a sense of urgency.

18. Denver (2-2) | Last week: 17

In their Monday night loss to Kansas City, the Broncos blew a fourth-quarter lead at home for the first time since 2004.

19. Pittsburgh (1-2-1) | Last week: 10

The Steelers' defense is so bad it's allowed at least 400 yards in three consecutive games for the first time since 1954.

20  Minnesota (1-2-1) | Last week: 15

The Vikings were first in defense last season. In their last three games – two losses and a tie -- they've allowed an average of 31.3 points.

21. Tampa Bay (2-2) | Last week: 11

Jameis Winston returns at quarterback after they lost back-to-back games. Starting with Atlanta, they play three of four on the road.

22. Atlanta (1-3) | Last week: 20

The Falcons have lost their last two at home to New Orleans and Cincinnati, surrendering 36.5 points in those defeats.

23. Cleveland (1-2-1) | Last week: 19

The surprising Browns are two bad calls by the officials from being 3-1. They appear to be capable of beating just about any team.

24. N.Y. Giants (1-3) | Last week: 24

The Giants lost at home to New Orleans after winning at Houston and looking like a legitimate offense. They play at Carolina.

25. Houston (1-3) | Last week: 30

Led by Deshaun Watson, the Texans have accumulated at least 420 yards of offense in three consecutive games for the first time in team history.

26. Oakland (1-3) | Last week: 31

Jon Gruden got his first victory this season over Cleveland. Derek Carr has six touchdowns, seven interceptions and eight sacks.

27. Indianapolis (1-3) | Last week: 27

The Colts have lost their last two games by four and three points. They play at New England, beginning a stretch of three of four on the road.

28. San Francisco (1-3) | Last week: 29

C.J. Beathard did an impressive job in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, but the 49ers still lost. They should beat the Cardinals.

29. Detroit (1-3) | Last week: 25

The Lions are coming off a loss at Dallas. They've allowed only nine points in the fourth quarter, but they've been outscored 94-114.

30 . Buffalo (1-3) | Last week: 26

The Bills have played three of their first four on the road. They play their next three against teams from the AFC South.

31. N.Y. Jets (1-3) | Last week: 28

After scoring 48 points in Sam Darnold's debut at Detroit, the Jets have been able to score only 41 in their last three games.

32. Arizona (0-4) | Last week: 32

In their first season under Steve Wilks, the Cardinals average only 9.4 points. They play the next two at San Francisco and Minnesota.
