Ninth inning: Red Sox 7, Astros 5
Top: Closer Craig Kimbrel replaced Porcello on the mound. Pinch-hitting for Martin Maldonado, Evan Gattis popped out to second base. Josh Reddick then struck out swinging. George Springer doubled to get on base, and Jose Altuve drove him in on an RBI single to narrow the gap to two runs. Bregman couldn’t keep the push going, flying out to deep left end the inning.
Eighth Inning: Red Sox 7, Astros 4
Bottom: Rafael Devers singled to reach base for the third time tonight. Both Ian Kinsler and Jackie Bradley Jr. struck out swinging. Pinch-hitting for Christian Vazquez, Mitch Moreland singled to right field.
Righthander Hector Rondon replaced James on the mound.
Mookie Betts doubled a line drive to center, driving in Devers and giving Boston a 7-4 lead. Rondon was then pulled, and Sipp — the lone lefty in Houston’s bullpen — entered the game. Benintendi flied out to end the inning.
Top: Righthander Rick Porcello entered the game for Brasier. Porcello retired the side in order. His pitch count: 18.
Seventh inning: Red Sox 6, Astros 4
Bottom: Righthander Lance McCullers Jr. replaced Cole on the mound. Cole pitched six innings, gave up six hits, struck out five, and walked two. He finished with 90 pitches (56 strikes). Righthander Josh James and lefthander Tony Sipp also started warming in the bullpen.
Mookie Betts walked to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch that struck out Andrew Benintendi. During J.D. Martinez’s at-bat, Betts advanced again after McCullers’s pitch got past Maldonado. Martinez worked a 3-2 count but struck out swinging.
During Xander Bogaerts’s at-bat, another pitch got past Maldonado and allowed Betts to score, extending Boston’s lead to 6-4. James replaced McCullers on the mound. James walked Bogaerts on four pitches before Steve Pearce grounded out.

Price pitched 4⅔ innings, gave up five hits, struck out four, and walked four. He finished with 80 pitches (50 strikes). Although he walked off the mound with the lead, Price cannot qualify for the win because he pitched less than five innings.
Barnes entered the game with two inherited base runners, but he struck out Marwin Gonzalez.
