Prepare your most wooden spoons for the first full day of action at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Friday schedule kicked off with a group stage matchup between Egypt and Uruguay that was billed as a clash between two of the most dynamic attackers in the world: Mo Salah and Luis Suarez. Alas, Salah remained on the bench and Suarez made the least of some scoring opportunities before teammate Jose Gimenez bailed him out with a last-gasp winner. Up next, it’s Morocco vs. Iran. After that, the trio of games concludes with as high-profile a clash as we’re going to see in the group stage: Spain vs. Portugal.

Uruguay emerged with a nervy 1-0 victory over the Salah-less Egypt thanks to an 89th-minute goal from Jose Gimenez.

Morocco and Iran created chances ... and got saves!

We’re still waiting for Mo Salah’s magic...

Salah, who suffered a shoulder injury while playing for Liverpool in the Champions League final, spent Egypt’s opening game on the bench. Egypt coach Héctor Cúper had previously said “I can almost assure you 100 percent he will play,” but the star was held out against Uruguay.

As long as Cristiano Ronaldo has a Portugal shirt on, he is a danger to opponents. Lose track of him even for a moment, and he decides the game.
