Uruguay vs. Russia Top Story Lines
• Both teams will be playing in the round of 16. Their most likely opponents in that round will be difficult: Spain and Portugal.
• The winner of this game wins the group, with Russia prevailing if it’s draw, because it has a better goal difference, 8-1 versus 2-0.
• Iranian fans gathered outside Portugal’s team hotel last night, chanting, blowing horns and singing. The revelry was so loud and lasted so long, that Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo eventually made an appearance in his window and signaled to the Iranians that he was trying to get some sleep.
• Uruguay joins Croatia as the only teams that have not yet surrendered a goal.
• Russia’s eight goals tie England and Belgium for the most at the Cup through two games. The offensive explosion is surprising, as the team struggled in the months leading up to the event, drawing Turkey in its final warm-up, for example.
• Playing the same teams as Russia, Uruguay also got two wins, but they were both by 1-0 scores.
• What The Times said (about Uruguay vs. Saudi Arabia): “If you’re not watching this game, you’re not missing much.”
• Russia’s top scorers have been Denis Cheryshev, with three goals, and Artem Dzyuba with two. Cheryshev was a surprise selection to the team, and only got on the field because Alan Dzagoev was injured early in the first game.
• Suarez, the team’s star, got the goal in the second game, against Saudi Arabia.
• Despite the gap in performance in Games 1 and 2, and home-field advantage, Uruguay is the slight favorite with bookmakers.
