61’: GOAL! Sweden Converts Penalty
Hector Moreno brought down Emil Berg in the area as Sweden counterattacked. Granqvist takes ... it’s in the upper corner! 2-0 Sweden!
Though it is down 2-0, Mexico can still go through. But if Germany scores, Mexico is out! That would be a crushing disappointment for a team that started with two wins.
57’: Larsson Down for Sweden
Sebastian Larsson of Sweden is stretchered off after a blow to the head. Gustav Svensson will check in.
55’: Back-and-Forth Shots Now
More from Sweden as Mexico continues to look a little lost on defense. Ludwig Augustinsson, the goal-scorer, puts one over.
54’: Mexico Retaliates
Mexico with some urgency now. Andres Guardado takes a pass on the edge of the box and fires a strike just inches over the bar.
53’: Sweden Keeps Up Attack
Emil Forsberg takes advantage of some Mexican disarray and gets off a good shot that goes high.
This result would put Sweden and Mexico through to the next round. But that’s assuming Germany doesn’t score against South Korea, a big assumption.
50: GOAL! Sweden Takes the Lead
Sweden takes the lead on Ludwig Augustinsson’s goal. Augustinsson one-timed a little looping pass from a tight angle. Mexico’s keeper Guillermo Ochoa could not react in time.
46’: Free Kick for Sweden
Hector Moreno is whistled for a foul on a physical challenge. Sweden gets a free kick in a dangerous spot.
46’: The Numbers
The second half gets underway. Nine shots for mexico in the first half and eight for Sweden. Mexico dominated possession, 66-34 percent, as Sweden opted to go direct for goal when it had the chance.
Halftime: Scoreless, but Exciting
No goals, but several chances and a very fast pace. It’s scoreless in the Germany vs. South Korea game as well.
45’ +1: Sweden on the Break ... Miss
Marcus Berg keeps it himself and goes on a last-second break. He puts it in the side netting. Goal kick. Berg has been extremely active in the first half, causing Mexico some problems in transition.
45’: Layun Denied
Miguel Layun makes some nifty moves and gets free, but his shot doesn’t have enough on it and it’s easily saved by Sweden’s goalkeeper Olsen.
43’: Mexico Intercepts
Emil Forsberg’s free kick goes straight to Mexico, who quickly move the other direction.
41’: Mexico Soooo Close
Jesus Gallardo’s cross is perfect, but Lozano is a beat too late sliding to it. There’s some disputation with the referee, who says play on.
40’: Sweden’s Defense Holds
Mexico opts for the short corner. A good pass into the box is handled by Sweden. Threat ended.
39’: Vela Misses
Carlos Vela gathers in a pass near the edge of the box and rockets one over the net for Mexico.
37’: Ochoa Sharp
Ola Toivonen chips one into the box, but Guillermo Ochoa is ready for it and pounces.
36’: Mexico Attack Fizzles
Mexico manages a little bit of possession but can’t make much of it. Remember though, that a draw is all Mexico needs.
34’: Berg Keeps Attacking
More from Sweden. With an athletic dive, Berg takes a beautiful lofted pass, but volleys one wide.
32’: Ochoa Saves a Goal
Great leaping save by Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa on a Marcus Berg point-blank shot! Sweden on top at the moment.
29’ Hand Ball? No.
Chicharito controls the ball in his own box with his chest ... and maybe his arm too? Sweden want a penalty. There’s no call, but now the video is called in. No penalty!
26’: Yellow for Sweden
26: Larsson of Sweden and Lozano collide in midair, and Lozano takes the worst of it, apparently. That’s a yellow for Larsson. There’s plenty of disagreement from the Swedish side, but the referee Nestor Pitana can’t hear them.
23’: Guardado Way Off
Andres Guardado takes a shot from distance at the end of a good sequence for Mexico, but it’s very bad, well wide.
23’: Herrera Blocked by Sweden
Hector Herrera scoots past two Mexican defenders and shoots from the edge of the box. A Swedish defender gets in the way and blocks.
18’: Sweden’s Turn to Miss
Now it’s Emil Forsberg of Sweden’s turn to send one too high. Lots of chances in the first 20 minutes.
17’: Close for Mexico!
Mexico capitalizes on a bad back pass but Carlos Vela shoots just wide left. That was almost a goal.
15’: Bad Pass for Chicharito
A great run for Mexico ends poorly when Chicharito leads his winger by a mile. Goal kick.
15’: Forsberg Too High
Mexico gets a good spell of possession, but can’t make it count. Going back the other way, Forsberg launches a shot far too high.
13’: Lozano Counterattack Offside
Mexico tries for a counterattack but Hirving Lozano is caught in the offside trap.
12’: Berg Almost Scores
Marcus Berg tries the bicycle kick off a corner for Sweden. It’s barely wide!
10’: Layun Lets One Fly
Mexico’s Miguel Layun creates some space and decides to let one go from distance. He cranks it wide.
8’: Mexico Free Kick
Viktor Claesson gets a whistle for rough play. Mexico’s free kick is too far away to scare anybody.
6’: Mexico Survives a Scare
Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa collects a bouncing ball but is said to have stepped out of his box with it. Close-in free kick to Emil Forsberg of Sweden, who blasts from point-blank range. Batted away! Mexico escapes.
4’: Sweden Keeps Pressing
More from Sweden. Ola Toivonen’s cross/shot is collected by the keeper.
2’: Sweden Threatens Early
On the resulting free kick, Andreas Granqvist comes inches short on a ball rolling across the box.
1’: Yellow for Gallardo. That Was Fast.
Seconds after kickoff, Toivonen goes down and Gallardo gets the world’s fastest yellow card for elbowing.
Kickoff!
Sweden in yellow, Mexico in green.
Mexico is 2-0 in this tournament and the favorite today. But Sweden is in more dire need of a result, which should even things up a bit.
The Scenarios
The scenarios for qualifying from this group are complicated — Sweden could win and be eliminated or lose and advance! There’s more detail further down this post, but here’s a quick version.
• Mexico must win or draw to be sure to advance. Still, If it loses, it might sneak through.
• Sweden probably needs to win, although it retains some hope with a draw or loss.
Big Stakes for Svensson
In an Instagram post, Anders Svensson of Sweden said he would give up eating tacos if Mexico knocks Sweden out. Svensson loves the food so much he is nicknamed ‘Taco.’
Chicharito on Verge of History
One of the men up front for Mexico today is 29-year-old Javier Hernandez or “Chicharito” as he is universally known. He has 50 goals in a Mexico jersey and is looking for 51, which would be a record, surpassing Luis Hernandez “El Matador,” no relation.
