Donald Trump bailed on the Eagles and that spells drama

President Donald Trump has wound himself closely into the NFL landscape. In May it was his role in the league’s new national anthem policy. He was involved in the league’s national anthem saga for a good chunk of last season, too. That included attacking players for kneeling in an effort to protest inequality, which is what triggered the NFL into changing its policies the first place.

Now, it’s his decision to uninvite the Super Bowl Champion Eagles to the White House for what was supposed to be a celebration of their vicotrious 2017 season.

Instead, the president threw himself a party at the NFL’s expense as on Tuesday he had the United States Marine Corps Band and the U.S. Army Chorus at the White House in place of the Super Bowl champs.

Elsewhere, on Tuesday morning Fox News chose to broadcast a video of Eagles players kneeling, portraying it as them protesting during the anthem. The problem is, the footage was of them praying, not protesting and wasn’t during the national anthem. Eagles players quickly took offense, including Zach Ertz and Chris Long.

It wasn’t long before Fox News had to apologize for their mistake.

Once the festivities at the White House actually began -- without the Eagles, of course -- it was clear Trump had orchestrated a ”celebration of the American flag” and though it was supposed to be for Eagles fans, it doesn’t seem those in attendance were actually Philly fans. They didn’t even know what it meant to be “Birds fans”.

Since the White House was trying to claim plain, old Americans were Eagles fans, we came up with nine simple steps to determine whether or not you’ve got actual Eagles fans in the house. Hopefully someone shoots this over to Trump’s team.

Bleeding Green Nation dove deeper into the Eagles’ canceled White House trip, including responding to the president claiming the players ”decided to abandon their fans” by not attending the trip, even though he disinvited them. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins released a statement of his own in response to Trump. Jenkins wasn’t planning to attend the White House visit, but he was going to do some community events in D.C., which have now been rescheduled for later in the summer.

Since the Eagles didn’t travel to D.C. on Tuesday, they instead held practice back in Philly. And while Trump may not support the Eagles, the Philadelphia mayor stood up for the team and had some choice words for the president.

In XFL news, Vince McMahon’s second attempt at creating a pro football league is coming to life. The XFL has hired Oliver Luck away from his post as an NCAA executive to serve as XFL commissioner. Luck may be best known as Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s father. He was also an NFL quarterback and second round pick by the Houston Oilers in 1982.

Jumping back in time a few years, retired NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz looked to set the record straight regarding the infamous Russell Wilson throw in Super Bowl 49 at the one-yard line.

You know, the one that crowned the Patriots Super Bowl Champions with a Malcolm Butler interception. As Schwartz writes, “For those who argue that Seahawks should have run the ball, where would you have liked them to run it? There are eight defenders in the box against six blockers, and they have leverage based on alignment against a possible inside zone from shotgun.”
