LeBron James did things to the Raptors again on Saturday night in Game 3.
He stuck yet another dagger into the hearts of the Raptors, this time with a majestic game-winner. He glided down the court with a poise that would have had you yelling at your TV if it was anybody else to hurry up.
Then, he jumped off his left foot, and kissed the basketball off the glass sending the it cleanly through the net.
This is what James does. He repeatedly ruins teams in the playoffs, and the Raptors are a customer that keeps coming back for more. They also seem to notice as much:
In Game 3, he served up 38 points on a 14-of-26 platter with a game-winning bank shot for dessert. At this point, we expect him to hand the Raptors a to-go box Monday night for Game 4.
It’s not a matter of if James is going to beat the Raptors. It’s a matter of how he’s going to beat the Raptors. Each year Toronto seems to make improvements. This year was supposed to be “the year” if there was ever going to be one for them. They won a franchise record 59 games, and came into this series after James and the Cavaliers went through the gauntlet with one of the NBA’s most fun teams in the Indiana Pacers. But none of that mattered for James.
After a grueling Game 7 in the first round, James entered the Air Canada Centre for Game 1, and walked out with a smooth 26-13-11 triple-double, and a win. In Game 2, he hit eight fadeaways while scoring 43 points on 19-of-28 shooting from the field. It was a slow burn that turned into the city of Toronto being renamed “LeBronto.” So you had to imagine back on his home court in Cleveland, something special was going to happen — and it did.
Do we know what we’re going to get in Game 4? Yes, but also no. James is more than likely going to have a good game. A lot of other things are going to happen around him. His team might play good or bad. The Raptors could come out with one of their best games of the season. But those things really just might not matter at this point. He’s having his way with the Raptors right now, and he knows it.
This is what “throw whatever you want at me, you can’t beat me” looks like:
It’s really just funny at this point (assuming you’re not a Raptors fan, and in that case, condolences). He demoralized the normally happy, energetic, and big-smiling Drake in Game 2, which turned into some good jokes after his Game 3 heroics:
The Raptors are going to get clowned relentlessly for this series. Though the reality is, James is just an entirely different entity. Players and coaches talk about when guys are “in a zone” or “playing at a high level.” But there’s another tier that James gets into when he’s torching the ground on his way to the Finals that nobody else can reach, and we’re watching it in real time.
Raptors head coach Dwane Casey said after the game, “Collectively, I was proud of the way the guys competed, laid their hearts out, and put ourselves in a position to win.”
When you’re going against No. 23 in the wine and gold in late April and the month of May, that’s all you can ask for, and hope it goes in your favor. Though it usually doesn’t.
