Race action 

Green flag on Lap 146: Alexander Rossi makes a big move from 9th to 5th. Helio Castroneves does a full spin and crashes in Turn 4 and into the entrance of pit road. Castroneves was seeking his 4th race victory. He exits the car under his own power.

Under caution: Will Power leads, with Ed Carpenter and Simon Pagenaud behind. Helio Castroneves is 5th. Josef Newgarden is 13th. Tony Kanaan is 22nd.

Lap 139: Sebastien Bourdais crashes in Turn 4. He was uninjured.

Lap 133: Sebastien Bourdais pits, and Josef Newgarden takes the lead. Newgarden is on an alternate pit strategy.

Lap 120: Will Power leads Ed Carpenter by 4+ seconds. Simon Pagenaud, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves are the rest of the top 5. Marco Andretti is 6th, followed by Charlie Kimball, Scott Dixon, Sebastien Bourdais and Sage Karam.

Lap 116: Kyle Kaiser retires from the race.

Lap 110: Power, Carpenter, Pagenaud, Hunter-Reay, Castroneves.

Graham Rahal and Zachary Claman De Melo each lead as pit stop cycle continues.

Race is official with 101 laps complete.

Lap 98: Tony Kanaan pits with a tire puncture.

Danica Patrick: "Today was really disappointing with what we wanted for my last race."

Sebastien Bourdais takes the lead for the first time in the Indy 500. He has led in every IndyCar race this season.

Spencer Pigot is assessed a drive-through penalty for excessive pit road speed. Jay Howard and Oriol Servia take turns with the lead.

After Tony Kanaan and Ed Carpenter pit, Penske drivers take top 3 spots (Power, Pagenaud, Castroneves).

Lap 89: Same top 5, all within 6 seconds. It's another 6 seconds back to 7th-place Marco Andretti.

Lap 80 (200 miles): Kanaan, Carpenter, Power, Pagenaud, Castroneves, Hunter-Reay. Josef Newgarden is 20th.

Alexander Rossi, who started 32nd, is up to 12th.

Green flag on Lap 74: Tony Kanaan takes the lead on Ed Carpenter.

Ed Jones is taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, complaining of a headache and neck pain.

Lap 68: Danica Patrick spins and crashes in Turn 2. That brings her racing career to an end. She finishes 30th.

Lap 67: Team Penske is 3rd (Newgarden), 4th (Pagenaud), 5th (Power), 6th (Castroneves).

Green flag on Lap 64: Tony Kanaan passes Ed Carpenter for the lead, but Carpenter gets him back. Kanaan has led in a record 14 Indy 500s.

Lap 58: Ed Jones hits the wall in Turn 2. Jones finished 3rd as a rookie last year.

Green flag on Lap 55: Ed Carpenter passes Zachary Claman De Melo in  a hurry to retake the lead.

Davison says an issue caused him to lose all handling and he was trying to stay out of the way of other drivers: "I feel for Takuma and his team getting caught up in that." Sato also cleared from infield hospital. Sato: "I hit the brake and tried to avoid it, but it just sucked me in."

Pit stops during caution: Race rookie Zachary Claman De Melo takes the lead, with Ed Carpenter, Tony Kanaan, Will Power and Josef Newgarden rounding out the top 5.

Lap 48: James Davison and defending race champ Takuma Sato crash in Turn 4. Sato's car climbed up Davison's momentarily. Davison was being passed by many cars shortly before the hit.  

Ed Carpenter has led 39+ laps, the most he has led in any Indy 500.

Lap 38: Ed Carpenter leads and Tony Kanaan is 2nd, 2.7 seconds behind.

Lap 35: Spencer Pigot and Graham Rahal go the farthest before their first pit stops. Kyle Kaiser assessed drive-through penalty for hitting personnel on pit road. No injuries initially reported.

Lap 32: Newgarden pits, and Spencer Pigot leads.

Lap 31: Ed Carpenter pits, as do Pagenaud and Power, and Josef Newgarden takes the lead.

Lap 30: Pit stops begin. Danica Patrick and Tony Kanaan head in.

Lap 28: James Davison is well off the pace, and passing cars have to be careful. He started 19th and is down to 27th.

Lap 20: Top 5 remain the same. Ed Carpenter leads by 1.5 seconds.

Lap 17: Graham Rahal started 30th and is up to 23rd.

Lap 10: Top 5 starters holder their positions: Carpenter, Pagenaud, Power, Newgarden. Bourdais.

Lap 8: Danica Patrick has fallen from 7th to 12th; Alexander Rossi has moved up to 26th from 32nd.

Tony Kanaan moves from 10th to 6th in the opening 2 laps.

Lap 1: Ed Carpenter leads. Simon Pagenaud and Will Power are battling for 2nd.

Sebastien Bourdais is starting fifth after missing last year's race because of a qualifying crash.

Scott Dixon, the 2008 race champ who is starting ninth: "We're confident. It's never easy here."

Tony Kanaan, the 2013 race champ who is starting 10th: "Consistency and mistake-free. You cannot afford to have one single hiccup."

Takuma Sato, the defending race champ who is starting 16th,  says his first hot laps this month made him emotional, but he got down to business.

Alexander Rossi, the 2016 race winner who is starting 32nd: "Obviously we're dissapointed, but it doesn't change (our approach). 

Danica Patrick, starting seventh: "I couldn't think of a better place to end my career. ... The work left to do is to stay clam, stay positive." She recalled the first advice she received 2005 from Al Unser Jr.: "It's a long race and don't ever believe it's over."

Spencer Pigot, who starts sixth: "We're all super comfortable with the cars we've had (in Ed Carpenter Racing)." That team has starters No. 1 (Ed Carpenter), 6 and 7 (Danica Patrick).

Helio Castroneves, three-time race champ, who starts eighth: "It's always a different thing." He isn't an IndyCar regular this season.

Josef Newgarden, IndyCar points leader and defending season champ, who starts fourth: "You'll know what type of race car you have 100 laps in."

Will Power, who starts third: "You can never say when it's your year, but all you can do is do your homework. ... We've put ourselves in a good position." 

Simon Pagenaud, who starts second: "I'm not intimated (by the Speedway) anymore. I can master this place. I can."

Pole sitter Ed Carpenter: "Usually the winner of the race deals with adversity at least once if not more. ... You need to minimize your mistakes."

Actor Chris Hemsworth is waving the green flag. Here's the key piece of advice he received: "Don't drop it."

James Hinchcliffe, who didn't qualify for the race, says he's helping teammates Robert Wickens and Jay Howard: "It's weird being at a racetrack and not getting ready to race."

Pole sitter Ed Carpenter expects early challenges for the lead: "Everybody will be working  to get to the front."
