Masters primer: Second round

A look at the 82nd Masters Tournament heading into Friday’s second round:

Leading: Jordan Spieth, the 2015 Masters champion, birdied five straight holes (13 through 17) en route to a 6-under par 66 to take a two-stroke lead over Tony Finau and Matt Kuchar.

Lurking: Patrick Reed, who played golf at University High growing up in Baton Rouge, is tied for fourth at 3-under 69. He’s part of a large group along with Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson. It is the first time Reed has broken 70 in the Masters in 13 rounds there.

Shot of the day: Amateur Doug Ghim jarred his 179-yard second shot on the 465-yard par-4 18th hole for an eagle 2, allowing him to finish at even par 72. The other five amateurs in the field were a combined 38-over par.

Where’s Tiger?: Four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, playing here for the first time since 2015, fell to 3-over after splashing his tee shot in Rae’s Creek on the par-3 12th for a bogey. He rallied with birdies at Nos. 14 and 16 for a 1-over 73 that had him in a tie for 29th.

Bye bye birdies: Woods parred all four par-5s Thursday. According to ESPN, it was just the fifth time in 79 career Masters rounds that he failed to birdie even one of Augusta National’s reachable par-5s.

Cut day: The field of 87 players will be reduced to the low 50 and ties following Friday’s second round and anyone within 10 strokes of the lead.

Incredible stat: Reigning Masters champion Sergio Garcia made a 13 on the par-5 15th hole. It tied the highest score on any hole in Masters history (13, Tom Weiskopf, 12th hole, 1980). Garcia’s 81 was the worst opening-round score by any defending champion.
