There were concerns Edgar was returning too quickly after he suffered his first stoppage loss. Edgar shrugged off those worries in the lead up to his matchup against Swanson, but fans and media members still had some anxiety about Edgar’s quick turnaround.

In the end, everything worked out for the New Jersey-born fighter. Edgar claimed the unanimous decision win, sweeping Swanson on the scorecards.

“I’m glad I’m back on track,” Edgar said on the UFC on FOX post-fight show. “It doesn’t erase that last loss, but it definitely makes it a little easier to get over.”

UFC Fight Night 128 took place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Edgar was scheduled to face featherweight champion Max Holloway at UFC 222, but when Holloway was injured, Ortega stepped in to take his place. Edgar could have opted out of that fight and waited for Holloway to heal up. Instead, he faced Ortega in what was a title eliminator fight. Holloway and Ortega are now set to fight in July at UFC 226. Edgar hopes to face the winner of that bout.

“I do feel like I’m the guy,” Edgar said. “I’m No. 3. I did have that title shot at Max, (but) he got hurt. I put it on the line against Ortega. I thought I was doing well. He caught me with a shot that I didn’t see, but I’d love to run it back with Ortega if he wins. Or if Max stays the champion, I’d love a shot at Max.”

Forty-Nine days ago Frankie Edgar suffered the first knockout loss of his career. The former UFC lightweight champion was knocked out by Brian Ortega in the first round of their UFC 222 bout. Despite that loss and a medical suspension that was in place until April 18, Edgar agreed to fight Cub Swanson at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 128.
