Timberwolves signing Derrick Rose for rest of season

The Timberwolves are signing guard Derrick Rose for the rest of the season, a source confirmed to the Star Tribune. ESPN first reported the news Thursday.

Rose, 29, figures to give the Wolves scoring off the bench as they try to make a push for their first playoff berth since 2004. Minnesota has been shorthanded since guard Jimmy Butler was injured last month.

Butler and Rose were teammates in Chicago for five seasons before the Bulls traded Rose to New York in June 2016. Tom Thibodeau, now the Timberwolves’ coach, had both players for those five seasons in Chicago.

The 2009 Rookie of the Year and 2011 league MVP, Rose is a three-time All-Star who has undergone four knee surgeries in his nine-year pro career. Cleveland dealt him to Utah at the trade deadline and the Jazz promptly waived him.
