New Cleveland general manager John Dorsey continued to wheel and deal on Saturday by reportedly agreeing to send defensive tackle Danny Shelton, a former first-round draft pick, to the New England Patriots for a third-round pick in 2019.
Dorsey, who struck three major deals Friday, also sent a 2018 fifth-round pick to the Patriots. Teams can’t finalize trades until the new league year begins Wednesday.
Shelton was selected with the No. 12 overall pick in 2015. The 6-foot-2, 335-pounder, who starred in college at Washington, started 45 of 46 games in three seasons with Cleveland.
•The Detroit Lions re-signed defensive end Kerry Hyder, who missed last season because of injury, to an undiclosed contract.
•The New York Giants released Brad Wing, who struggled as their punter last season.
Soccer: With Lionel Messi away from Barcelona due to the birth of his third son, Cristiano Ronaldo overtook Messi as the Spanish season’s leading scorer over all competitions after his double led Real Madrid to a 2-1 win at Eibar.
However, Barcelona increased its lead in the Spanish league to 11 points over Atletico Madrid, with Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho picking up the slack in a 2-0 victory at Malaga.
•In the English Premier League, Marcus Rashford scored twice in the first 24 minutes, and Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 to strengthen second place.
Meanwhile, struggling West Ham lost to Burnley 3-0, a game interrupted twice when West Ham home fans invaded the field to confront players and gathered below the owners box, forcing security to escort the owners out.
•After again falling short in the Champions League, host Paris Saint-Germain got back into the routine of dominating the French league by crushing last-place Metz 5-0. The win maintained PSG’s 14-point lead over second-place Monaco with only nine games remaining.
•In MLS highlights, Diego Rossi scored two goals and Los Angeles FC stayed undefeated as a franchise with a 5-1 rout at Real Salt Lake. ... Chris Tierney scored on a free kick in the 93rd minute and the host New England Revolution beat Colorado 2-1 to spoil the Rapids’ season opener and give former U.S. World Cup goalkeeper Brad Friedel his first win as a coach. ... U.S. national team forward Gyasi Zardes scored two goals, the second on a penalty in the 94th minute, and the host Columbus Crew beat the Montreal Impact 3-2.
Skiing: A day after locking up her second straight World Cup overall championship, American Mikaela Shiffrin secured her fifth season title in the slalom, winning the race in Ofterschwang, Germany. Shiffrin, who turns 23 on Tuesday, became the first 22-year-old skier, male or female, with 42 World Cup wins.
•Thomas Dressen won a men’s World Cup downhill race in Kvutfjell, Norway, less than two months after he became the first German winner in the discipline in 13 years.
Motor sports: In a new car and on a slick racing surface, rookie Robert Wickens snatched the pole away from Will Power for the IndyCar season-opening race through the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla.
Obituary: Chris Gedney, an All-American tight end at Syracuse who played in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals, died at 47 in Syracuse. No cause of death was disclosed.
•Ronnie Franklin, who rode Spectacular Bid to victory in the 1979 Kentucky Derby and Preakness before their Triple Crown try was derailed in the Belmont, died at 58 of lung cancer in Baltimore.
Franklin was 19 when he guided Spectacular Bid to victory as a 3-5 favorite in the Kentucky Derby. After winning the Preakness by 5½ lengths, Franklin’s bid to capture the Triple Crown ended in the Belmont when Spectacular Bid finished third.
