HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Waianae native and UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway suffered a leg injury during a training session this week and will be unable to compete at UFC 222, according to sources with knowledge of the injury.

Holloway was scheduled to fight Frankie Edgar as the main event at the upcoming Las Vegas bout, which will be held on March 3 at the T-Mobile Arena.

The UFC announced earlier this month that the long-awaited bout with Edgar would finally take place; the pair were originally supposed to square off in December, but Edgar was forced to withdraw from that card with an injury.

The UFC has reportedly begun looking at other options for the main event, according to ESPN's Brett Okamoto, who first reported the injury.

Holloway earned the UFC's featherweight belt in Brazil last year by defeating then-interim champion Jose Aldo. The victory extended his winning streak to 11 and unified the UFC's 145-pound weight class.

Holloway beat Aldo a second time at UFC 218 in Detroit, when the Brazilian stepped in for Edgar following his injury.
