Brandon Browner only spent one year with the Patriots, but it didn’t stop him from airing his frustration with yesterday’s benching of Malcolm Butler.
The former cornerback took to Instagram during and after the Patriots’ 41-33 loss last night to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, with an expletive-filled rant against Bill Belichick’s decision not to use Butler on the defensive side of the football. He posted six different times in reference to Butler’s omission from the lineup.
“Bill wasn’t right at all tonight,” Browner said. “I don’t know how to feel watching that (expletive) without watching my homie Malcolm playing.”
Among the posts was one showing Butler during the national anthem with his head in his hand. The post has received nearly 7,000 likes, including one from current Patriots captain Dont’a Hightower, who missed the game because of injury.
It includes the caption, “A locker room was divided pre game, most yds ever given in up in a SB game, and your best defender over the past 3 seasons. Doesn’t get a snap. You where (sic) hurt/burnt where he was needed tonight,” and concludes with the hashtag “foolishpride.”
The Patriots defense allowed Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles to throw for 373 yards and three touchdowns and allowed 538 total yards. The Eagles converted 10-of-16 times on third down.
Browner spent the 2014 season with the Patriots, and on Butler's famous goal-line interception that sealed the Super Bowl XLIX win over the Seahawks, Browner jammed Jermaine Kearse at the line of scrimmage, preventing Kearse from picking off Butler that would have freed up Ricardo Lockett.
The team did not pick up a roster bonus for Browner following the season and he played the following year with New Orleans. He was signed in 2016 by the Seahawks but released before the regular season began.
