WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Results: Ronda Rousey Signs Contract, Leads New Wave Of UFC-To-WWE Crossovers

LAS VEGAS, NV - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) WWE Chief Brand Officer Stephanie McMahon, MMA fighter Ronda Rousey and WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative Paul 'Triple H' Levesque appear on the red carpet of the WWE Mae Young Classic on September 12, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. With Rousey now signed, sealed and delivered as a full-time performer for WWE, Rousey joins teammate and former UFC bantamweight Shayna Baszler, whose impressive showing in the Mae Young classic seemed to be a precursor to Rousey's imminent defection from mixed martial arts to WWE.

In 2008, Brock Lesnar, current WWE Universal champion, became the first athlete in history to win world champions in both WWE and UFC. And while this impressive feat was unprecedented, Lesnar's dual-sport athleticism is not.

Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn were two former prominent UFC fighters before making their way to WWE, where Shamrock was a fixture of the Attitude Era and seemed well on his way to becoming a world champion before going back to the UFC.

UFC's incumbent trio of megastars—Rousey, Jon Jones and Conor McGregor, who may or may not have been stripped of his Lightweight Championship due to inactivity—are currently on the outs with the company for one reason or another. Jones is currently facing what could be a four-year suspension for a failed drug test. McGregor, whose relationship with UFC appears to be falling apart, is a permanent subject of rumors that he will one day appear in WWE. Even if McGregor works with WWE in a non-wrestling role, the bankable fighter stands to make tens of millions of dollars for a one-off appearance.

ESPN reported Floyd Mayweather, who recently fought McGregor in a historic boxing match that drew the second-most buys of all time with 4.3 million, made around $20 million for his appearance at WrestleMania XXIV. With Lesnar making $12 million in 2017 as a part-time performer, the allure to sign with WWE is the strongest among the top proven draws in combat sports.

Ronda Rousey's not-so-shocking-but-still-awesome Royal Rumble appearance Sunday night continued a longstanding WWE legacy of shootfighters crossing over to the squared circle.
